That was sick. Harley's run looked like the best run of the finals, minus the 1 fall. Rusty's 10 was just dirty though. so sick

Why did he not get 1st? Good run and a 1080 and being the first ever in competition.

To understand why Rusty did not get first you have to understand the entire scoring system. 5 categories (Air, Spins, Tech, Rails, Overall) Rustys 1080 gave him 1st in Spins, which is 22.5% points, Phil got second in spins which is 20.25 points. Phil was ahead of Rusty in Tech, Rails, Air and Overall. This system does not allow for a "trump card" trick like the old system did. With this system the "spin to win" is incorrect. Tech is 27.5%. The DRIVE format requires a very balanced run.

Nice great breakdown of the scoring. I just figured to throw something down that major for the first time it would hard to not give him the spot. But besides not getting the win its a major milestone.

That video is a pretty good advertisement for the level of riding in the Pro tour. Hammer after hammer. The 10 was dope no doubt, but maximum respect to Phil who watches Rusty's run from the doc then comes out and stomps his run. Pressure riding at its best. Oh and to all the negativity nancy's getting down on the judges, Imagine it is your job to rank those guys from 1-4, live, in a noisy boat, with everybody watching. I've been there and the pressure isn't just on the guys riding, its on the judging crew and driver too. (Message edited by Ralph on August 17, 2009) Edited for spelling... Congrats Rusty on being the first to land a 1080 in comp. that's amazing. I remember years ago when Watson stuck the first comp 9. This is taking away from Phil at all (I dont know what he threw but Im sure he absolutely killed it), but with the current format I don't see a whole lot of incentive for these guys to be trying to 10's off the 2up. Obviously its been landed now, but given first in spins only gives you 2.25% over whoever goes 2nd in spins is (atleast I dont think) not enough of a gap to risk throwing a 1080. I mean Rusty is probably more consistent than anyone on these things and now that its been landed I just don't see a whole lot of incentive for a rider as far as from a 'i want to win the contest' perspective. Unless of course one of the pros feels like their chances of not advancing isn't really possible, then what the hell why not throw it.

Mark Kenny threw the first nine in comp at Ontario provincial championships. Watson hit the first 9 in a pro competition a few weeks later. Steve Edwards hit the first w2w 9 in a pro contest while he was riding in juniors. Watson hit one the same day.

Yeah, Kenny was a legend. It's not fair that people question if he did a 10 when he had witnesses like Mike Farraro. But Tino and Bob Soven have no footage of their 10's and no one questions them.
