Just picked up the new Alpine 5M (total impulse buy)...I want to put a single 12 in the boat and was wondering what sub and box type would pair well with the 300 watts the amp offers on its 5th mono channel (keeping in mind that alpines generaly are over there said ratings)? I listen to all kinds of music, but mostly rock and rap.

JL w3 or to save some cash Polk Audio db, not the Momo, db sounds much better IMO.

Do you suggest the 4 or 2 ohm jl audio W3, 12...and in a ported box, or sealed?
Thanks guys!

The Wet Sounds XS-12 sounds great, but it needs a little more power than 300W. It may do okay in a sealed enclosure though.

John -shoulda known you'd suggest wetsounds! ...good lookin out man! :-)
I think for this application my amp would not be enough to power the wetsounds (which I believe has an rms of 500 watts).

I have a 12" Kicker L7 and absolutely love it.

300 watts isn't enough for an L7 either. Go with the JL W3 in a large sealed box or a ported to JL spec. The ported to JL spec will be the best blend of efficiency and output, and will still sound great. I'd do the 2 ohm.

Dual 2 ohm 12" cvr in a big slot ported box will slam on 300rms

That amp's 300 watts are at 2ohm, so you will need a 4ohm DVC sub to get that 300. So go with either the W/S xs-12 D4 or the Kicker CompVR124.

Thats incorrect...Same Power Output - 2Ù or 4Ù Configuration
PDX amplifiers have the unique capability to deliver the same power output regardless of 2Ù and 4Ù loads. This provides the ultimate in system flexibility and subwoofer configuration diversity.

What hate n pain said :-)
...So should I go 2 or 4ohm on the jl W3 since I have the option?

Thanks for the clarification, Hate, I'm not an Alpine expert. Just looked at their specs and it stated the amp's output at 2ohm.

Justin, it doesn't matter with these guys either way is gonna be the same. Typically 4 ohms is cleaner and more effecient but your not gonna notice it with a sub and these amps.

i just ordered that same amp for my buddies pontoon and were going to hook up a kicker L5 10" to it and 4 kicker km620's to the other 4 channels.

Justin, you'll need a dual 4-ohm speaker.
Old     (hatepain)      Join Date: Aug 2006       06-19-2009, 2:02 PM Reply
or a dual 2 ohm wired in series to show the amp 4 ohms.

300 watts won't push those enough though or at least to get your money out of them.

imo go with a kicker cvx 10 with only 300 watts. I have one in my boat with a 1000.1 powering it ( way more power then needed) and it sounds amazing. I have mine in a sealed box but you would want to go ported with 300 watts. Good luck my .02

I had a JBL 1024 in my boat for a season that I really liked. It was pushed by 300 watts, not PDX 300 either and it knocked good in a sealed box.

300W = Alpine Type R in a little sealed box

a cvx wouldnt get half the power it needs. i have a cheap mtx in my truck and it sounds ok. i still vote cvr but a type r wouldnt suck either. but everyone saying l7 l5 cvx 300 is not enough power to push any of those. and in my earlier post i said dual 2 but if the amp is stable at 2 than get the dual 4. i didnt look at specs. and thought it was 2 channels briged.

in my vehicle I have a single 10 w3 4ohm in a 1cubic foot sealed box with about 350 watts rms going to it and people cant believe its a single 10 and sounds so clean.

Thanks for the input -sounds like the JL Audio W3 4ohm in a ported box is the way to rock -just have to decide between the 10" or the 12".

So you're telling him that with lower power, he should use a ported box? That's incorrect if that's what you're saying. Ported enclosures require more power. Sealed don't require as much, but either way, the more power the better it will be.

Justin, a single 4ohm W3 would be fine. With the limited power you'd be better off with just one woofer with limited power.

^^^and the 10" to get the most out of it. IMO

I meant to say " with the limited power, you'd be better off with just one woofer in a sealed enclosure".

Like Hate said, a 10" is also the best choice in this situation.

SO...this may throw and wrench in the mix (or help)...
I JUST opened the box to my PDX 5M and the actual true power for the 5th channel (mono sub) is 418 watts!!
I think I should be fine with a 12 and that amount of power -that's 118 MORE watts than stated...gotta love Alpine amps!

(just took delivery of my Pro 80's -the sub will complete the system)

Yeah you can do a 12" in a sealed, in fact my buddy had a 12w6 sealed in his jeep with 400 watts and it sounded really good. Mind you a jeep and a boat are very different acoustical environments but it'd sound good. Yep gotta love PDX they don't F around!
