So I am gonna paint my boat this summer? Which color combo do you think will be better? I like the white on the bottom because it won't show the scratches from the trailer. But the all black would look sick.

BTW, I suck with art.

I am also open to any other color options. The boat has a black tower now. I was thinking another option would be all white with a black stripe.

How is all white asking for trouble?

I think metalic silver would look cool.

I like the little bit of white flair.... mostly black with just a little white, maybe even bring the white up a little bit farther in pic one... my .02

all black doesnt do it for me. white and black but try to make the black a metallic finish. i would like to see something different with the sn2001. can that be moved to the middle and made(painted) to look a little more modern?

I was thinking maybe do all white with a black stripe, similar to this 210.Upload
Old     (malibuboarder75)      Join Date: Jan 2004       03-08-2007, 5:18 AM Reply
Why the metallic finish. The guy doing the paint job gets this paint that costs $500 a gallon. I dont even want to know how much metallic costs.

The stripe down the side would look sick and maybe a pair of docking lights

nato grey, with a faded star on the side

all black..ninja style.

Here is another option. I don't know how much extra he would charge for the stripe.

The black would be cool, but way too hot for me.

Here is one for you Alan. If I do add lettering, it will be vinyl stickers, not actual paint, that way I can change it over time.

Leo, have you added a prop guard to that trailer since the pics were taken?

No, any suggestions on how to add one or pictures of recent ones?

i like the white with a black stripe. I have thought about something similar to that with my 2001. How much is it going to cost you?
Old     (malibuboarder75)      Join Date: Jan 2004       03-08-2007, 11:11 AM Reply
About $2500 from a guy who has worked for some of the top builders in TN for 35 years. He broke away from the corporate scene and now builds custom boats and does fiberglass repair.

what about the second to last one with nautique 2001 in it but you used the original "2001" font. That would be money. I'd make it a little larger though.

the last one looks the best IMO. I was going to say the stripe will get complicated, but for 2500, you should get exactly what you want. BTW, that sounds a little high. I'm sure this guy know what he's doing, but its a restoration and I'm sure you want your money out of it. not saying it won't happen.. i would hesitate to drop it on a paint job

try light gray with black stripe

the old block style 2001 would look sick

prop guard: unfortunately, it looks like you would have no support whatsoever to building a cage around. not sure what i would do first...

I would do the stripe and then for the lettering get domed numbers to do the 2001 logo

How is $2500 high for a paint job? He charges $1200 for the hull and $1200 for the deck. The paint he uses is $500 per gallon and he said he uses about a gallon and a quart on a boat. The rest of the money is for man hours, prep work, and equipment. He is also doing my stringers and floor for a hell of a price. His quote is $1500 less than any other quote, and the pictures of his work are flawless.
Old     (wakeboardin2k4)      Join Date: Sep 2006       03-08-2007, 6:59 PM Reply
do you have any pictures of his work? Just thought it would be interesting to see what he has done and is capable of doing with your boat
Old     (malibuboarder75)      Join Date: Jan 2004       03-08-2007, 7:03 PM Reply
He mailed me pictures and with a price quote for the work. He did email me pictures of the stringer and floor work. So I am not sure what he is capable of as far as painting goes.

How much does a decent paint job go for? I know they are around $2000-2500 for a good job. He builds custom race boats, so I am assuming they look good.

leo the white with black strip looks pimp. im still a fan of sprucing up the lettering to make it more modern. the reason i like black with metallic is because i dont think its going to look dingy(the metallic i think will hide alot of stuff) where all solid black youre gonna see alot of dirt and imperfection in your wax and clean up jobs. i like the one you did, as opposed to the others. it looks a little racier to me and modern. are you limited on fonts for your lettering?
Old     (malibuboarder75)      Join Date: Jan 2004       03-08-2007, 7:24 PM Reply
Alan, I hope everyone reads this post. But I plan on only using Vinyl or Bubble lettering for the sides. The only actual paint job I am going to have done is the all white hull and deck with a black stripe.

I agree Alan. I like the simple looks of just the lettering in the back corner. I think I am going to do all white, since like you said, black shows all the imperfections.

I like the stripe more up front as in my original picture. It looks like it flows with the front of the hull. Also look at the picture of the SAN 210. The curve is under the windshield.

One more to throw in the mix. It doesnt really look good with out the 'AIR' symbol in the middle.Upload
Old     (closedtoe)      Join Date: Jan 2007       03-08-2007, 8:38 PM Reply
You should put the air symbol there I think it would look tight.
Old    alanp            03-08-2007, 9:58 PM Reply
can you do the first boat with the strip towards the front and the small lettering you used on that last boat. that may be a winner. imo

is this your college boat?

When the guy rebuilds your floors is he going to use plywood or just glass over foam again? I am having mine done and the guy is putting 3/4 plywood for the whole floor. Front to back, Should make it very solid!
Old     (malibuboarder75)      Join Date: Jan 2004       03-09-2007, 12:54 AM Reply
Alan, that is the direction I am heading currently.

Yes, this is our Texas A&M club boat. On top of the new paint job, stringers, and floor. We will also be adding some wetsounds speakers.

Jeff, the guy who is rebuilding also uses 3/4 treated plywood that he lets dry out first.

I like #3 as well but why not make the stripe maroon if it is the Texas A&M boat.
Old     (malibuboarder75)      Join Date: Jan 2004       03-09-2007, 7:00 AM Reply
The main reason for the black stripe is the black tower and black tower speakers. I thought about maroon, but I think it would have looked awkward. I think the resale would be better on neutral colors, not like I would ever sell the boat though. Even if I could afford another one.

yea, after I thought about it, doesn't really seem that high. I'm trying to find a pic of my buddy's 2001 that he had painted. he went with air decal and it came out pretty nice.
Old     (malibuboarder75)      Join Date: Jan 2004       03-09-2007, 7:04 AM Reply
Yea, the air decal would be something down the road. I want to keep the paint job simple. He thought I wanted the original paint job done, that is why the quote was $2400. He says all white with the black stripe will drop the price $500.

Here is some maroon for you jon.Upload

I like the maroon and I think it would work great like that with your black tower. You could always have a vynal shop do the stripe and then if you think the colors are bad you could pull it off and have it redone.
