I'm trying to get some feedback as to weather or not a Range Rover Sport, non supercharged, would be a good tow vehicle. I currently have a 2001 Yukon and its finally time to find a replacement. The sport is rated at 300 hp/ 315 lbs torque, so by those numbers I believe it would be similiar to my Yukon, right? Any insight would be great. Thanks in advance.

Also do you guys think they are yuppie mobiles? Do they fit in ok at the lake scene?

Yuppie or rapper! I tow with a discovery and it will pull my boat, but not fast. I do not think they are the best tow vehicle, but they are comfortable. I tow through mild hills and I do notice going uphill. Keep in mind that even though it is a luxury truck, it is meant to crawl slowly through the worst terrain imaginable. It's no Lightning or SS.

what is the tow capacity? I wold be more concerned with that. Brakes, suspension, etc...

Do they make one with a diesel?

I like range rover, but I would buy something else to tow with. I did recently see someone towing a beautiful x-30 with an HSE and boat looked to be in more control than the HSE.

I have a 2006 Ranger Rover full-size supercharged. I tow a lot of weight with it as I have one of the heaviest wakeboard boats made. It tows like a dream. Here is a terrible phone pic I just took.

England's definition of Gasket- Something placed between two engine parts to keep the oil from flowing out slower than you can put it in.

I've got a friend with one basically identical to D-Units there. Definitely mackin'. A tow unit though? Never tried, but by J-Rod's #'s there, the HSE should be fine. What are the #'s on the Sport.

If you are looking at a RR have you seen the new Mercedes GL, they are supposed to be nice. Not saying RR won't cut the mustard just not first choice, for me.

like eric i tow with a discovery. I have no problems at the ramp (some lakes where I boat the ramps are sand or really short). I do better than most of the 4x4's out there. Where the difference comes is on the highway. Slow and eats up gas.
The RR should be much better in both categories. Who cares what people at the lake think!

rr are one of the best 4x4's in the world... you are a lucky guy..

Thanks for all your reply's, definitely keep 'em coming.

My boat isin't that heavy, 1st generation X-star so what maybe 4500 lbs. Its well under RR's capacity but to those of you who tow with RR's do you ever feel tossed around or slighty controled by the trailer at all. To me my Yukon does such a good job towing, 75 mph and its solid as a rock and I'd probably just get the new 07 style and be done, but there's just something about the Range.

Hey Ben...you tow that big ol X45 around?

Very PIMP setup.

I tow my x45 with a supercharged range rover sport and it is perfect. The LR towing kit parts are expensive so make sure thats a throw-in when you make your purchase.

Here are a few pictures of my rig. I never feel controlled by the trailer when driving. I would get the Brembo front brakes if they are optional on the HSE.

They do make them diesel, but you won't get one in the US. When you talk about the weight of the boat, don't figure on dry weight. You must factor in gas, and anythign else you are going to put in there like coolers and lead. Trailer brakes are a big help. The shorter wheelbase (shorter than a full size pickup) can make for some handling/braking issues, so just be sensible.

Oh yeah...you won't need a dipstick for the oil...when the spot on your driveway isn't getting bigger, you are out of oil!! Be prepared for major league service bills and premium fuel at 12mpg at the most.

This is the wierdest occurrence ever -- as yesterday I was looking at a Range Rover, thinking about selling my 2002 Yukon and getting one -- then thinking "I'll check wakeworld tommorrow to see if anyone is pulling with them"...

Wakeworld FTW!

Nice pics everyone.

Will.....that is some serious pimpin. That boat looks huge, good to hear it handles it well. I was looking at adding brembos, but through an aftermarket company called overfinch. I have some sweet pics but having trouble getting them to upload to WW.

Chrissocal you asked:

"do you ever feel tossed around or slightly controlled by the trailer at all."

Big time. I tow with my land rover and it’s not the power or the braking, it’s that my boat on the trailer is so much bigger than my car. I went from a f150 and it is a noticeable difference for me...

I hope none of you towing 24 + ft boats ever have to get on the brakes hard.

Looks awesome, but Will and Ben's setup cannot be safe.

That RR has more tow capacity than a Tahoe doesn't it? Unless numbers lie.

I think I'd get a F-250 Diesel... LOL!! Just kidding.

I bet it'd tow fine. On another note: my boss'es wife just got a GL 450. Nice ride. A bit to Guchi of a truck for my taste, but really nice. I like to leave my Guchi'ness behind in the garage and take a "truck" to the lake. If you're only going to have one ride though I'd say the sport or the GL's are really nice.

Range Rovers don't leak, they just mark their territory!
Old     (bennygoodx)      Join Date: Aug 2006       01-26-2007, 11:17 AM Reply
My Range doesn't leak and I don't pay for any services--better be that way when you pay that much for a truck.

My boat tows my X-45 perfectly at 75 MPH. Mind you with gas and coolers it is at my max towing capacity. Stopping is fine as its got 15 inch Brembo disc brakes.

I keep my boat at the lake in dry storage and they launch it for me so I don't have to tow it on the highways--only bring it in for services. I call a number and drive to the lake. Boat is tied to the dock and ready for boat bun.

An x45 looks to be a pretty big boat to be towing with a Tahoe too. I dunno, the boat just looks so out of proportion to the tow vehicle.

What is a loaded up x45 and trailer weighing in at anyways?
Old     (bennygoodx)      Join Date: Aug 2006       01-26-2007, 11:22 AM Reply
An X-45 is 6000 lbs (boat and trailer). It holds 90 gallons of gas which is like 650 lbs. Then add whatever toys you want, beer, etc...

It's a beast. No way around it...

Ben...you ought to check your fluids if it isn't leaking!!! j/j nice ride and you are right about the service issues...for the money there really should not be any.

I have a 2002 Tahoe that I normally tow with but recently have been towing with my wife's 04 RR (non-supercharged). The Tahoe undoubtedly tows better, I hardly notice the boat (SAN with additional 4-500 lbs left in ballast). Having said that, the RR does a fair job and is far more agile while towing it seems. I just put it in low range at the ramp and it does great. Hope this helps.
