I know that many Moomba & Supra owners have experienced the issue of their platform getting wet and tracking a black residue onto the boat interior.

My question is that has anyone found a permanent solution short of Gator Grip/Hydro Turf. I know that keeping out of the sun and cleaning with Simple Green will help - but not resolve.

Is there anything made that could be used as a type of sealant on the platform to not allow this residue to come off? (not referring to Rhino or Linex)...more of a clear coat sealant for rubber??

I have pulled my rubber off my platform and will be putting some of this stuff on there before summer. http://www.boatmatz.com/ .

I used a bottle of Goo Gone to get the glue off that is under the old rubber. Its a time consuming job.

I have heard of people using a clear epoxy spray on sealant for this. Automotive grade. But I have not tried it on mine. I have been using simple grren to keep the black stuff at bay as best as I can. If the boat sits out side for even a few days the black residue returns. I clean it again and its gone... like magic! Very frustrating!

I have been puting up with it for 3 years...whats even more frustrating is it gets on your shorts when pulling yourself out of the water....

Has there been any response from Supra on this? Do you know if the 2006 and 2007 models do this as well?

I actually e-mailed Matt Brown with Skiers Choice on Friday but have not received a reply yet.

I know it was still an issue with 05 models, not sure about 06-07.

I think they changed it in 06 to some sort of material that was supposed to be better. I don't know the results...

I just bought my '06 Launch 20 SSV so I don't know if this is a problem or not. I'm old school and will probably switch mine out for a teak platform later on.

Supra and Moomba did change their material in 06 and is the same for 07. I have had zero problems with either year of boat. Then again, I never had a problem with previous year platforms either.

Jon - as a dealer, you have never had a complaint from a customer with a 2005 year or older model boat?

As you can see from this post, it is a very common occurrence and I find it strange that you have not heard of this issue.
Old     (smokedog2)      Join Date: Dec 2004       01-08-2007, 6:25 PM Reply
Aero 303 - it is an oxidation issue I think.

Covering the platform in storage will also help.

I have yet to have a problem with my 2005

I am in the process of making platform covers out of heavy nylon and neoprene. These covers will fit like a glove on the swim platforms, and be non-slip. Hopefully the prototypes will be finished by the summer. Transom protectors are also almost done.

I think it has to do with leaving it out in the sun. At the beginning of last year i had that problem. I cleaned it with Purple Stuff and a hard brissle brush, it lasted almost all summer before it came back. It wont be on there next year.

Nope. I really have not heard a complaint from any of my customers. Plus we used a 2004 Mobius LS, a 2005 Mobius LSV, a 2004 Launch 21, and a 2003 Launch 22SSV as demo boats. Never had a problem with anything. I do hear that other people are having problems but that is just my experience.

I had a major issue with my 06 Outback, but very little issue with my 06 Supra. I think it was do to the fact that the Supra's swim step was submerged most of the time. Both my boats are/were exposed to the sun.

I don't think covering the platform during storage will make it any better. I have a 2004 SSV and have this problem only when it's warm out during the height of the summer. I ride year round and only experience this issue when it's 90 degrees or above.

I rode this past weekend in 50 degree air temp / 50 degree water and had no issues with the black residue. Yet, in the summer the black residue gets tracked all over my boat. This makes me certain that the problem is more prevelant when temperatures are higher.

Is boatmatz.com just an upgrade to the Gator Grip site?

I live in Seattle, and we only see 90 a few days out of the summer.

Yet, I have the problem almost all summer. It is the worst towards the end of the summer.

It is so bad if I have not cleaned it in a while, it will about ruin the first suit that touches it. Worse than that it makes everyone's feet dirty when they get in/out of the water. Makes for a dirty interior unless I'm being that guy who makes people take soap and brush to their feet before coming back on. And I've been that guy before.

I got an e-mail from Matt Brown with Skiers Choice a few hours ago and he said he would send me another e-mail tomorrow with some options. As soon as I have that, I will share what he says.

I'd be interested to hear what he has to say Mike. I've been living with this problem for the past couple of years. Ruined many pairs of boardshorts and have to keep a towel in the back for everyone to wipe their feet on before they get in. A total P I T A for sure. I was going to replace the mat with gator grip, but w/o peeling the old mat off entirely, it looks like the surface underneath is not smooth so I wasn't sure how well it would stick.

I never heard of this before, I had no problem with my 03 LSV or my 06 LSV. My friends 04 Supra dosen't have the problem, they did change the meteral in 06 to a harder compound. Must be the clean water in Oregon

I had the issue with my '04. However, the lake I ride in most of the time could be the nastiest in the Midwest.

I think a teak conversion is the way to go, personally I think gator grip and boatmaz look very unappealing....but then again I feel the same about tinted windows on boats so I am sure I am a minority on this one.

Update - Matt e-mailed me back and is going to mail me the 2006 platform material they are using so I can replace mine. I have asked him how I should advise others that need this material (if they should e-mail him or call Skiers Choice customer service).

He also had the below to say about using cleaners on these platforms:

I can tell you that the non-skid manufacturer strongly recommends that you do not use any cleaner on the product such as simple green, armor all, or any other cleaner. The chemicals in most cleaners actually react with the non-skid and causes the black carbon to come to the surface. Then when sitting in the sun, this carbon oxidizes and gathers on the top. Then when the carbon gets wet it tracks into the boat. They recommend you only clean the surface with soap and water. Think of it this way… Originally the surface has a type of top coat on it. Once the top coat is removed by the chemicals, then there is no protection and this process happens. The chemicals are what can take this top coat off the product and once removed, you will always have problems. Just something to consider.

So in other words.... never wash your boat. Like me.

Michael,

Can you PM me Matt's contact info? I would like to replace mine as well.

I can tell you that I never wash my swim platform, ever. Since it's not covered by my mooring cover, there's really no point in washing it when I wash my boat. At most, it gets some suds on it from rinsing off my boat, butr it never gets cleaned specifically.

If there's a solution to this problem, can someone please forward me the email/pm as well. Not having to deal with black streaks all over the interior would make my summer a lot better.

Like others, I've never taken any sort of cleaner to my platform either. It gets a bath each time we dunk her in the lake.

Every time I see Rick post on here it makes me love my Supra even more!!!!

So how do I go about getting the new material as well for my 05 21v? I have never used anything but soap and water and it's pretty bad.

Just heard back from Matt and he said to follow these steps to get it replaced:

They need to contact their dealer and if the dealer has any questions, tell them to reference Wakeworld or contact Rob Loucks directly at the plant.
