I just saw Zane Schwenke on a mastercraft rewind 2010 video. That guy can still flat out ride. I would like to see an over 30 contest to see who is the best....Gonzalez, Nunn, Murray, Shapiro??? Contests these days seem to have gone the way of ice skating. More technical and less style.

Randalls not 30 yet. Is Murray 30? Man I'm getting old. Ricky G's getting close to 30 I think. Cobe still kills it. Necrassons riding again. Byerly has been sighted strapping into a wakeboard again, pick up the new WBM for photos.

Andy, what's crazy is that it used to be that your career as a pro was pretty much done at 27-28 but now it definitely isn't the case. These guys are reaching their primes at 24-25 with obviously some young guns thrown in the mix.

I think Ricky was working on getting a masters division for the PWT. not sure if that is a possibility in this economy. pretty sure that puts him in the 30 year old range. I would say Murray, Shapiro, Benny G and Ricky G. in no particular order. (Message edited by ttrigo on January 26, 2010)

Oh yeah, you gotta give it up for Ricky. He comes out to the Spring Ride every year for the D-U contest, and he's left with cash the last two years. He finds the D-U in the choppy water and schools the youngsters.

Murray! He is the only one making it to the semi finals and finals with the youngsters. Otherwise I would vote the Scud.

These guys don't need to compete against each other. They're all fantastic riders that have already brought so much for the sport. I'm glad that they've stuck around and keep shredding as hard as they do. (Hahn - Glad to see that Necrason style! Thanks for the shots!)

I have love for all of the guys over 30. I am in that boat as well, and I still love to ride. Most of these guys invented most of the moves that you see today. I think that there should be a division just for them. They should have an old school contest like the one I saw on Fuel with skaters. Just the OG's, and only old school moves, on old school gear. You get extra points for wearing old school clothes too.

I have alot a health/fitness backgroud with alot of experience within physical therapy and I have studied alot of muscle physiology. If you train...your body can stay in great condition. But you can't sit on the couch and play video games all the time and expect to do crow mobes when you are 50. If you're On the right training program, there really is nothing you can't do. All this talk about riders who are 34 and stuff is kinda funny to me (not hating on anyone) I think that the idea comes from the majority of people over 30 just suck at life and don't do anything. haha. Muscle starts declining around age 40-45 if you don't train. Ligaments get weaker due to collagen not being manufactured after age 45 but you CAN slow the decline down with training. Maximum Heart Rate and VO2 Max decline with age but not to an extent where you won't be able to throw down a contest run(expecially if you stay in shape)In my opinion through school and experience...If you stay in shape: a person could keep a competetive edge through age 50 or maybe even higher. haha..I know that sounds funny but its true. The only thing that we can't control through exercise is the mind. Mental awareness will decline and there isn't much we can do about it. So it will affect the NFL quarterback and his quick decisions on the field...but I seriously doubt it affects wakeboarding. the worst thing that could happen if you stay in shape would be this: Imagine we're at a pro tour stop in 2030 and Ricky G is 54 yrs old. He cuts in to do a Pete Rose but two feet from the wake he forgets what trick he was planning to do and just has a mid-air brain fart and falls. Big Deal right? So just watch this video of Herschel walker dominating his first fight in the MMA at age 47. He looks fine to me! Ricky, Benny, Murray, Zane, Byerly, etc. etc. are just getting starting. haha. I hope this motivates everyone to put some hard tunes on their ipod and go to the gym!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSsgbMpD_fw http://www.faqs.org/sports-science/A-Ba-and-timeline/Aging-and-Athletic-Performance.html (Message edited by bawllaoutacontrol on February 02, 2010) (Message edited by bawllaoutacontrol on February 02, 2010)

nice post, I liked hearing that perspective! I do agree that a lot of it is in the mind. Younger riders also tend to not think so much about the consequences of injury and thus are able to ride more fearlessly. I think the big factor you left out is the recovery from injuries as you get older. Definitely its a bigger deal as you age which sucks. In your example the consequence of a 54 year old ricky g crashing a crow mobe the injury would probably be pretty severe vs a younger rider.

true true....I read where a 45 yr old would recover 14-18% longer time as a 30 yr old with same injury. Where is that fountain of youth

The biggest difference from our professional atheletes and other sports, is that the majority of professional wakeboarders don't treat it like a profession. I can name a stack of guys that were in the top 10 and partied like rock stars most of their careers. You switch over to moto, snowboarding, football, basketball,etc.. And these guys are in training programs, eating right and treating it like a job. There are exceptions to this of course. When you look at Brett Favre, Randy Couture, and Phil Mickelson, you realize these guys have cross trained and take their personal fitness to the next level. Alot of it is age too. This sports really is bred from young people and that leads to some of the extra partying, not to mention sitting on a boat in the sun all day. Heck I just watched a special on Jimmie Johnson (4-time Nascar champion) and the dude is working out every day trying to be in the ultimate shape to sit in that car for hours. He has hired one of the best trainers in the world to cross train him to be the most fit guy in the business. He has been driving race cars most of his life and could just sit back and keep beating him, but he is taking control of his health. Tiger woods is the same (short of his extra curricular activities). Dude is a work out machine and it has shown on the golf course. I hope the new generation of wakeboarders are doing the same and taking their training more seriously. There is no reason why most of the top 10 guys should not be riding in their 30's like Murray, Cobe, Necrassen.
