Is it pretty straight forward? Its leaking from my DD shaft, and also leaking a little bit at the rear where it connects to the rudder.

What kind of boat are we talking about here? I have a malibu and have had no luck getting it loose to repack, needless to say, its at the shop now.....

Its a searay spitfire. Has a 5.7 with velvet drive 1:1

I took the stuffing box nut off today and tried to see what size stuffing I would need. I could fit a 1/4" drill bit between the shaft and the threads of the nut and still had very slight play back and forth.

With that said should I go with 5/16 or stick with 1/4" and hope it expands enough to seal?

Call the guys at Skidim.com. And check out their Goretex "virtually dripless" packing.
