Up until just a few moments ago, I had decided to purchase a new Canon EOS Rebel XSi. Now I am rethinking. I am new to the DSLR world, but wondering if I should move up the to the 40D. I like the 6.5 FPS on the 40D for action, and wondering if the the MP 12 vs 10 makes much of a difference. I am going with the Canon's due to the fact that I have access to lens. I am going to complete some further research and talk to some folks at the camera shops but thought I would ask you guys. Rebel XSi or the 40D?

I wouldn't worry about the difference in MP, the more robust body and much better AF of the 40D will more then make up for that. Plus the 40D has better high ISO performance as well.

Cooper - I was in the same situation about a year and a half ago and went with the EOS Rebel XT. It was my first DSLR and I thought I would never need anything more, but as most will tell you, it never stays that way. I have really enjoyed my camera, but it just isn't enough anymore especially from the boat. I will be upgrading to the 40 soon. I have used one several times and it is just leaps and bounds ahead. I definitely wouldn't worry about the MP. You will definitely be more pleased. Just my .02.

From all I've read, out of those two, 40D for sure. I'm in the market as well and will be trying to score one after Christmas...

I have a 40 D. I am pretty impressed with the camera. I was on a shoot with a well known wakeboarding photographer. His water housing malfunctioned, and his 1DII got dunked. He used my 40D for the rest of the shoot and got some awesome photos with it. You can pick them up in excellent condition for less than $800. Check out Fred Miranda Buy and Sell forums.

Cooper, I was in the same position as you about 6 months ago, back and forth for a couple of months. Went with the 40D. Love it, the 6.5 fps is awesome for shooting wake.

^^ Maybe, maybe not. Some Canon devotees don't think so. The reasoning sort of goes like this: The 30D was only a marginal improvement over the 20D. The 40D was a bigger jump up. The 50D was in many ways a marginal improvement over the 40D. Where wakeboarding is concerned, the AF mechanism of the 40D and 50D are very similar. The AF of the 40D was a big improvement over the 20D/30D. Other than the bump up in megapixels, which may have its own problems (see http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/87667/641635.html?1228914743), a really nice feature of the 50D is the ability to microadjust the focus for different lenses. Also, the LCD screen on the 50D is higher resolution than the 40D. None of this has me itching to upgrade anytime soon, so I guess my answer is no. (Message edited by deltawake on December 10, 2008)

Thanks I think a 40d maybe a good upgrade from the 20d. I'm still looking for the new 5D m2 concerned about first gen issues..but 30 frames a second sounds cool!! Even if video res..2k is not bad. cheers D

The 40D also has Spot Metering, a PC connection for remote flash, and more ISO increments over teh XSi. The larger, better built body also feels better in your hands. If you get an XSi and really get into photography you will regret it within a year.

Merry early Christmas to me! As you can see, I took everyone's advise. Now I just have to figure out how to turn it on. Thanks for all the great feedback.

Love the camera so far. Not sure my dog feels the same way about having his picture taken.
