while winterizing the boat last night i notice that water was leaking out of a nut on the prop shaft into the bilge area. Is this the start of a large problem or is there a seal that needs to be replaced? the water wasn't coming from the v-drive unit but from a nut that the prop shaft went into. i can get pics if needed to point out where its comin from.

any ideas?

are you referring to the shaft packing?

if he is does that mean he's winterizing his boat while in the water?

definitely packing gland. Doesn't sound like a tighten-up will help. May have to repack, then adjust the nut.

Interesting point, John...... So Jason, is the boat sitting on the water while your seeing this?
How old a boat is it?
I would think you could just tighten it up a bit & it will slow down the leak to an acceptable rate.

hey bill, the boat is an 96 sanger v210 that was imported from california to canada. I will first try the route of tightening up that nut in the spring when we take it out again. the boat was only in the water to warm up the engine in order to fog it and then change the oil. I noticed the leak when it was just sitting in the water warming up. How hard is it to repack if that is what it needs? can the parts be obtained from skidim.com?

jason, not a bad repair. main thing is getting good access wth a vdrive. yes you can get the parts from skidim. probably want to call them so they can instruct you on what size rope you will need.

send me a email and i can foward you very good instructions.

So I imagine the boat has been off the water for quite a while & only recently been back on the lake for a bit (test drive & winterizing). Most likely the old wax/rope packing has dried out. Being on a 12 yr old boat it's a bit of a crapshoot as to whether or not you will need to repack yet, depends on how many times it dried out & then was back on the water. If you were going to use the boat this fall, I'd tell you to tighten it down a bit, use the boat & see what happens, but winter will be a good time for you to learn how it's done... and you will be ready for spring.

When you talk to the Skidim guys, ask them if you can get the new dripless packing for that boat. Then you won't ever have this happen again.

50 weight ball bearing grease will fix it.
