you want a horizontal shaft engine that is 6.5 hp or higher. you will also need a torque converter. most people use the tav 2 fo up to a 8 or 9 hp engine. a more hp engine will need a comet 30 or 40 series torque converter.

I would do a Honda GX 200 (6.5 HP) racing go cart motor with a TAV: if you need more power later you can always take off the governor, or do the first stage racing mod to get 9 HP out of the motor..

Gearing with 12 tooth TAV or 12 tooth clutch: 56 tooth #41 chain

You can find a lot of great information on building a winch at www.wakeboarding-winch.com

Upload

1. 6.5 HP motor probably around 300 USD
2. Torq-a-verter brand CVT cover and transmission... around 180 USD
3. sprocket: you can use anywhere from 56 to 72 tooth sprocket with a 4 to 8 inch spool... about 30 USD
4. #41 Chain approx 15 USD
5. Belt for the CVT comes with #2
6. hitch pin for transporting winch using the hitch of a car
7. pillow block bearings, holds shaft onto the frame... approx 30 USD
8. Gocart axle... 30 in long, cut to fit your frame... approx 30 USD
9. ibolt can be used for rope guidance 2 USD
10. Fairlead rollers for rope guidance onto the spool 10 USD

Then you can can customize everything else all you want... Here are pics of our winch:

I went with a 6.5 hp. Deepwater starts are no prob with a TAV. Anything bigger will just add weight and make it harder to get into places.
