If faced with replacing impeller when out on the water, I assume you have to plug up the intake hose to stop taking on water when you remove the housing. If so, what do you use?

I used a towel. It was not fun but saved the day.

Since 2005 coast guard requires a shut-off valve on all through hull fittings.

As long as your not fully loaded with ballast the impeller housing shouldn't be lower than the waterline so the only water coming out will be whats left in the hose.

You won't need one. Physics says that the water will only rise to the same level as the outside of the boat. So, as long as the impeller is above the water line you are OK

If water comes in, no big deal, thats what the bilge pump is for. How long does it take you to change? Not long enough to do any damage

I changed mine on the water on my VLX.
The pump must be right around water level.
I had no problem when it was just me in the boat. I needed some help getting impeller out. When my buddy was in the boat with me, water started coming in. Not flooding in fast. My buddy just held his hand there while I grabbed the new impeller an changed it. Overall, probably took in a gallon of water.
