Has anyone been there in Mid August? What is your opinions on Shaver Lake? Good or Bad. Does it get cold at night, due to the elevation? Any info would be great. Thanks in advance....

It gets a little chilly but is not too bad. There are a million people on the lake though. It's a beautiful lake, just a bit crowded.

During the week its nice early but gets blown out around 11-noon but not many boats, the weekend gets very busy. As for the temp, Very nice at night low 60's, warm in the day 80-90, water temp is around 66-72. Great trout fishing, Horse Back ridding, Very Beautiful and relaxing. There is many things to do up in that area, Many other lakes and a drive to mono hot springs is very cool.

I concur with everything Kevin said. Shaver is great, but the lake is full of hidden rocks/ boulders. I know someone who hit one two years back, and caused $8,500 in damage, plus the boat was in the shop for two months. Good thing the Wedge wasn't down, or the back of the boat probably would of been torn off, and the boat at the bottom of the lake. Not to mention the passengers!!! That same trip, another VLX dinged their prop on one. I will not take our boat there.

For camping, it's beautiful!! For boarding, too much of a risk for us.

I have been there before many many years ago. It was the begining of June. Super cold water for me and like everyone had said there were unmarked boulders everywhere, but I hadn't been there in August and thought maybe I should give it another chance. I did enjoy the camping, but I am there for the boating. I am still on the fence at this point.

Brannon- IMO, if you're going strictly for boarding it's not worth it. We've been up there a few times, and it's beautiful from 5.30am to about 10, but after that - no good. Plus like I said before - BOULDERS BRO!!! Last year the water was way down too. Not sure what it's like now though.

Looks like Shaver is about 150ish miles from Soquel. Go to Lake San Antonio, and it will save you 40 or so miles each way. It's a completely different camping atmosphere, but the boating is better, IMO, and no BOULDERS. Those things will ruin a trip.
