I am doing my best to talk my buddy into going ahead and dewinterizing.. I would be in in a minute if he would do it. One of our fishing buddies told us that in the 4 to 5 ft range the water was 60 degrees. We dont have wetsuits, so my main question is, when is it bearable?? What temp do we need to wait for?

Pretty accurate. I'd say anything under 70 is pretty rough w/out any sort of suit. Of course, I'm also old and weak.

Last year we went with the water temp at approximately 50 degrees. It was cold. Especially when first getting in, took your breath away. Made it difficult to get into the bindings. I tried a half wet suit the first run, but took it off because it wasn't fitting right. Once I got up riding and got the 'ol blood pumping it didn't seem too bad. Once you get back into the boat, better have a sweatshirt or something warm to put on. I'd say depending on where you live determines what too cold is. Here in the midwest we would have to wait a long time for the water to hit 70.
Have fun.

I think anything under 150 should be fine.

if it's above 60 i will go it without a wetsuit, the first time i rode last year it was 54 and i had a shorty wetsuit, so it was still pretty cold. but the water only ever gets up to like 75 here so when it gets above 60 i get excited :-)

I was going to post a very similar question. The water here is around 54 but the air temp has been in the 80's fairly consistently. I don't have a wetsuit or anything so I'm going to trunk it. Was curious how many other people go in water that cold and how it is.

Up here in Washington, we don't have the luxury of warm water. IMHO: If the airtemp is in the mid-high 60s, then water temp down to the low 50s is tolerable with out a suit. If either temp drops any lower, then you need a suit.

Anything close to 60 and I'm trunking it....

Water temps are so regional. Many places think 70 is cool water, here it is close to where we top out.

"Ohhhh feel how warm the water is getting. What's the temp?"

"68"

Many people set a rule based on air and water. I wont skin it unless the air and water temps add up to over 145. I wont dry suit it if they dont add up to 100.

Wow I would think if the air temp was consistanly in the 80's the water would be a bit warmer then 54.

Similiar to Jason's response - shorty wetsuit once the water temps hit 50 and the air is 70. At fifty deg. water temp, have everything ready to go once you hit the water. One good thing is that we usually the only ones out riding.

Being comfortable and being rideable are two different things. I'm comfortable whent the water hits the high sixties/low seventies. It's rideable anytime. For me, it's wetsuit-able when the water is mid-fifties

The winters here are anything but consistent. the is TEXAS! Two weeks ago it was 88 on Thursday and 25 on Friday. On March 1, the water here was 49, and the air was 94!! Today, its in the 70's. I can take the colder water when I pop up into really warm air.

I hear you on that Dave!

I find it much easier to try new things at Powell and its 80+ degree water. Amazing how much softer water is 15 degrees warmer.

Up here in Alberta last spring I was riding the week after the ice came off the lake. That was the 2nd or 3rd week in April. No idea what the temp was but lets just say freaking cold. Shortied that day.

beanies/hoods make a world of difference with a wetsuit. When you hit the water you don't get the whole hyperventilate shock by keeping your head almost dry and at the least warm.

chris611 hit the nail on the head!
you will actually find that if its colder outside, then the water will feel warmer than it really is. i'm lucky to live in florida, none of this winterizing stuff to deal with. me and my family ride all year round (although only me and my dad wakeboard). we went out yesterday and i would say the water was around 65. when it hits 70, thats when it gets to be a real nice temp. for me.

Rode yesterday, 45 water, 54 air, 10mph wind. 5mm long wet suit. The water was painfully cold.

My pain threshold has become any water above 50 is bearable with a suit. Below 50 and your hands and feet are numb with pain and you're better off skateboarding or snowboarding. Above 60 the suit comes off. Just my personal Pennsylvania perspecive. We have pansies who wear fullsuits in August around here, so it's just what you can handle.

Daniel--the water temp is 54 when the air is consistently in the 80's due to the fact that the river is fed out of the bottom of a lake so it's take a while for it to warm up.

I just got the boat back yesterday and will definitely be out the next weekend I have a chance.

water temp was 63 yesterday but still too cold for me. I'm starting to think I need to buy a wetsuit.
