I'm going to look at an '87 SN2001 tomorrow. for the most part it looks in pretty good condition/well taken care of, just curious how weary i should be of 1000 hours on original engine/tranny. according to the seller it's had all the maintenance, oil changes, winter/dewinterize, etc. and appears to be in good cond.

should i be too concerned about 1000 hours on an original PCM351?

Mine has 1000 and still runs like a top. I was just going to have the carb rebuilt and the guy said there was no need. He couldn't believe it was so old and still really well.

mine went at 1500. but it was a lack of maintanance on the previous owners part. new long block and mine couldnt run better.

check the gel coat over carefully, I've heard some of the 87's had gel issues.

Have a leak-down and compression test done, those are good indicators of an engine's condition.

I would be more concerned about the stringers. The motor, if taken care of properly is probably still good.

Even if the thing was cared for very well there is still a good chance that the stringers are rotten. It is a big job that I am in the middle of right now. Turn a bolt that runs into the stringers, if it doesnt tighten and just spins free then either walk away or start negotiating.

Yea, stringers are a pretty big problem on old boats...although with the 2001s, you still wouldnt lose much money if you had to replace them. Materials for stringers and floor cost $1000 if you do it yourself. Paying someone else would be $3000-$5000. If you can get a good deal on one, you would basically have a new boat when you are done with the stringer replacement.

1000 hours aint bad at all if its well taken care of. check out the stringers like everyone said, but i think if the boat was taken care of most of its life then the stringers should be ok, thats just my personal experience though. you pumped up about it? hell im excited for you man! its a great boat!
