this past weekend i tried 360s, coming ever so close. but a few times i caught back edge and slammed my head pretty good. my dad wants me to get a helmet before trying anymore. are helmets worth buying to help prevent head injuries when just riding on the water (no rails)?

A question, and a question in return. Answer wisely.

What do you have to lose from NOT getting a helmet?

I tried on both Jeff and the Protec was waaay more comfy, and has ear protection. Does shred Ready? The one I tried on didn't. And Jamie, yes they help with the head slaps from my own personal experience.

Do it, helmets are the way forward. I hope everyone starts wearing one so I'm not the only one on the lake with one on (not that I care too much what other's think though).

I've had plenty of big crashes wearing the helmet (Protec Ace Wake) and not felt any pain yet. Except my most recent crash, but then it's going to be a pretty high expectation to hope that a helmet would protect the knees ;-)

yes shred ready has ear protection. Shaggy, vixen, superscrappy, AHM, AHM jr. all come with ear flaps. the FMJ shell covers the ears.
also have new freestyle audio MP3 with waterproof headphone in the earflaps as an upgraded earflap.

from the website... it doesn't look like any of the shredready helmets have ear protection other than the full faced.

Jamie,

Your dad is a wise man. Concussions are easier and easier to get with everyone.

Pro-Tec Ace has got my vote. Be sure you get a "Wake" helmet, not a "water" helmet, not a skate helmet, not a kayak helmet.

Roy, read the discription, the models listed above all have compression molded detachable earflaps.

The fit is everything when it comes to a good helmet for wakeboarding or any other sport and the Shred Ready helmets have the best fit in the biz IMO and yes they have compression molded detachable ear flaps as well as the H.O.G Lock Retention System - fits behind nape of neck for secure custom fit. Its really sweet how the H.O.G. lock system works, you can dial it in for a great snug fit. We sell the Protec ace wake as well, but IMO the Shred Ready is a step above.
