Im am looking to make a purchase A.S.A.P and the two boats I am looking at are an 04 Malibu Wakestter VLX with an IllusionX tower or a 05 Supra 21V. Both look clean and the prices are comparable. What do you guys think is an all around better boat. Thanks for your input. Scott

For me, it's the Supra all the way. The 21V has a steep wake that just straight boots you. Definitely not your average 21 foot boat. Drive them both, throw on a heater shirt and take a set, and let that make your decision. Personally though, it's a 21v hands down.

Go with the supra. The 04 VLx is an old hull design. The 05 21v hull is still being used on the 2010's with a few fine adjustments in 2009. Plus the supra has a wakeplate that will give you adjustments. Supra is bigger, deeper, adjustable wake, bigger wake with the ability to hide over 2000 lbs plumb in to the stock system, and just an all around better boat.

I have owned both boats. You will find the interior of the 21V to be a bit deeper but about the same size as the VLX. The wakes are very similar as well. The 21v Is a bit steeper and having the Hyd wakeplate lets you play around a little more than the VLX. The VlX is still probably my favorite wake though. In my opinion it is one of the best/most conssistant wakes with the wedge down and stock ballast. As far as the handling of the boat the VLX felt quicker and more responsive than the 21v but on the flip side the 21v felt more burley in mid to large level chop and double ups. The only problem the 21v had was Vapor Lock every once in a while in hot weather. It is not really a Supra problem but that specific Indmar 340hp motor. the dealer had to install a 2nd fuel pump to aleviate the problem. Never had any problems with the malibu. For what its worth you cant go wrong with either one. I loved them both i dont know if this link will work but here are pictures of both boats http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/album.php?aid=2001608&id=1522125135

Thanks for the input. I guess either way I would be getting a good boat. I should not have vapour locks where im from. Our summer temps range from 20 C to 28 C from june until late sept. and that is a good summer.lol.

Caleb hit it on the nose, the Supra 21v was the first wakeboard boat I ever rode behind back in '05. I have since drove and rode behind anything you can name and still thought that the 21v had the best wake ever. It's really steep and just BOOTS you. I would have got a 21v instead of a 24 but I got a deal I couldn't pass up (and, well, yea it has a fantastic steep wake too). Try both of them and see what you like but seriously the '05 Supra 21v is a FANTASTIC boat.

Both are GREAT boats!!! I've ridden tons behind both and love them. Factor in hours, price, color preference, distance to nearest dealer and go with the one that best fits you. Good luck/CONGRATS!!!

As others have said, you can't beat the height you get off the 21v wake. It boots you up where the VLX boots you out. I like the deeper interior of the 21V and the ease with which you can add ballast. Easy choice for me.

I think you should drive them both and buy the one you like best. Notice all the Supra owners will tell you Supra, and all the Malibu owners will tell you Malibu. Both good boats you'll just have to make that decision yourself on what meets your needs and wants the best. By the way the Malibu can hide 2000 lbs ballast to, in fact half of it will be under the floor so you really won't see it and you can still have storage.

I agree with Jon, The 2005 Supra hull design is a classic deep-v hull and honestly the new hull design on the 2009 Malibu VLX is pretty similar. Im not a big fan of the 04 VLX hull design although, if you are skiing I hear that it can still be adjusted to make a decent ski wake. Note: The 21V is a$$ heavy and you dont have to add much ballast to the rear of the boat. The playpen set up is great for adding weight and doesnt take away from your storage areas. I would recommend the longer 650 Gravity Games bags in the back and the 1100 in the front.

For me, the VLX, the wedge adds a nice lip which kicks you a lot like the Supra IMO

Most 04 VLX's would have the wedge.

I think Malibu introduced the wedge in 98 or 99 so it should have it. The wedge and some ballast should get you a great wake. Both are great boats but you should decide what type of wake you like....rampy or vert.

Load them both with EQUAL ballast, ride them both and then make a decision.
