My Sony head unit already has a built-in EQ and I can fade my boat speakers in and out with my tower speakers. Is there any benefit in a stand alone equalizer. This has come up a few times while I was researching the wetsounds pro 80's.
BTW, I am getting ready to pull the trigger on 2 pair of pro 80's.

The best thing about a good EQ is the voltage on the rca out to the amp is higher than the rca out the deck has. This helps the the amp from over working and gives a better sound.

you will need a eq with the pro-80's.... they are very "hot" on top (there is no crossover)...

not all eq's will have line driver's built in. Like Steve mentioned if you get one I'd try and find one with a built in line driver to boost the output voltage. I use an eq/line driver on my pro 80's as well. Depending on what amp you go with I'd try running your pro 80's straight from the deck to the amp and see what kind of sound you get, if you feel it needs more tweaking that what your HU can give you then get the eq.

The higher signal has nothing to do with over-working an amp, it keeps the signal to noise ratio better.

EQ's are generally used to compensate for system responses that are less than ideal. If used properly they can be great, if misused they can result in a very weird sounding system. Also, if it is an analog EQ it will add phase changes to the signal.
