I've searched this and can't find a clear answer: Will a 1998 Mastercraft Prostar 190 described by the dealer as having a "Prowake II hull" throw a decent wake?

Many thanks for any advice.

It is a small boat so it will take alot of weight to displace alot of water. I had a 94 190 and we loved it but the wake is definately built for the slalom skier.

Preston That doesn't sound right.

Don't big boats need more weight?

Larger boats naturally displace more water becasue the naturally weigh more. Also the surface area of the hull helps. What happens though is that a larger boat can hold more weight and then displace more water

Nope, big boats already displace more water to begin with, a 190 needs to be slammed

larger boat= more surface area/floatation,which would require more lbs to sink IMO. that narrow beam ski boat is gonna sit a lot lower with 1.5k than a larger boat.

Er, fair enough. If it is slammed will it produce a decent wake? Or sink?

Preston: you're not totally mistaken, but what you say it's not accurate.

A larger boat MAY produce a larger wake when weighted down, but because of it's bigger surface it needs more weight to sink.
A smaller boat can produce a large wake with not much added weight because of the smaller surface.

As far as I know, that Prostar hull pulls out quite a good wake.

The prostar 190 when loaded enough to produce a modest wake sits very low in the water. The prostar 205 hull is what was morphed into the x-star post 1998. The 190 hull is a premium slalom boat.

Aha! Thanks Gordon. That's what I need to know. Looks like I'll be passing that one.

If your Prostar 190 is closed bow, it will not throw a huge wake. I had a PS 190 and weighted down it did fine while I was learning. The wake is rampy with little to no lip.

BTW, to sink a boat, regardless of size, you have to add enough weight to disburse the amount of water needed to overcome the buoyancy force of the boat.

The ProStar 190 built from 1995 -1997 is a smaller version of the 205. Teh 190 was actullay built first then was morped into the 205 The 205 was originally built as a family slalom friendly hull. as luck had it when loaded with weight it produced one of the best wakeboard wakes going. So they built a V driver version of the hull and the Xstar was born.

The 1998 ProStar hull is a totally different hull passing on the 98 hull is most likley the right move now a 97 is another matter.

The SportStar is the same hull as the 95-97 Prostar and was built from 98 -2003

since were getting really technical here, there were a few all blue direct drive X Stars. I believe they were 98's. Then in 99 they went to the v drive 205's and X Stars.

Your pic of the wake is about right. My '93 will create a wake just like that when loaded properly. A fat seat works great, but not really needed. The wake that the 190 puts out is all most people need. Monster wakes don't make you any better. Tecnique on a smaller wake results in good tricks. I usually run 750# rear and 440# in the bow. Good boat to surf with too...crus,in wave. With no sacs great for wakskate! The only problem with the 190 is with 5 people and sacs it is a little crowded. Mine is for sale,fyi....

i run a 1995 ps 190 so im not sure about the 98 however there is nothing i cant accomplish with my wake. so far i have over 10 inverts and a host of spins. if the price is right, id say go for it, however i dont know how different the 95-98 hulls are.
