Hello all! I am taking my first house boating trip and i was hoping those who have been to shasta can give me some tips. Good places to park the houseboat, good places to board (where water is a little nicer), any cool sites and so on. Also is there a spot that people usually go an tie up and drink some beer? At my normal lake Nacimento there are a few coves that people gather to hang out. Any comments would be much appreciated. I will have my boat and the houseboat so i want to sitesee this lake. Thanks

Josh

We just got back from a four day trip. Launched at Holiday, toured around Jones, and made our way up the Sac arm to Obrien inlet, although there were some very nice areas towards the dam. 5 different people will give you 5 different answers to your questions, so.....

Beer drinking spots....besides a couple of weekends in May at Slaughterhouse island, I don't know of any place similar to the narrows at Nac or the rocks at Don Pedro. On any given week, I'm sure you can find a big houseboat party group though.

Nice water: we had good water for the days we were there (it's shasta!). As the wind shifted directions during the day, we would find lines against shore lines that blocked the wind. Stay clear of the main congestion areas (like bridge bay), and I'm sure you will find good water to ride.

Gas: 4.70-ish most places. 4.39 @ holiday (cheapest), 5+ at Bridge bay.

Launch - holiday very shallow dirt "ramp". Suv's were nearly up to the bumper to get the trailer deep enough. Lakeview ramp was sill good, but very steep. Packer still in good shape. Jones ok also. Don't know about the rest of them.

Water dropping fast (approx 1 foot/day), so, depending on the shoreline you're on, moving the houseboat each day may be a good idea.
