Cutting up the wake without slipping is an edge control issue, not a board design issue. I haven't ridden the substance, but I rode a Subjeckt. I thought is was a fun board to ride, but the pop was more than I am used to with my Byerly. It's a bit more of a wild ride.

Sounds like you might like the Subjekt Jim considering how you like "a bit more of a wild ride".
Seriously though, without those 3 inch fins you use, any board is going to feel slippery.

Jim - did you think that the substance slipped going up the wake?

whats up, i used to ride a substance and just recently bought a subject and i love it. but i rode my substance without center fins. if you dont ride all that often the subject will be difficult to ride. you definately have to hold your edge up the wake. but the pop is unbelievable, unlike anything ive ever rode. i will never go back to a substance, the subject is sick.

The subjekt will hold just as much up the wake as the substance, but once the fins release on the subjekt there's no traction at all, where with the subtsance, if the molded fins release, they still form all the way down into some grooves, and there are grooves on the side of the board, and those still give you some traction.

subjekt rides too low in the water for me... and if I liked 3stage I would have both boards because they both rock.

Anytime that you're on edge, the Subjekt really locks in. I don't think you'd have any trouble with it slipping out from under you as long as you have it on edge.
