New boat break in ?'s Sanger 215

I have a 2009 Sanger 215, and looking to break in it in, now I know what the manual says and it just seems extreme, just wanted to get some other feedback on this for new boats,

I followed the manufacturer's recommendations. While it was a bit frustrating putting around for 10 hours, I've got over 600 hours on it now, and it's never been back to the dealer, or any other repair place...

hey Chris after you did the 10 hours, did you change fluids, what year is yours? My manual said 20 hours break in

My manual is at our river place, but I remember I changed the fluids at 10 hours, and again at 20 hours.
I come from the old school, and believe the first few oil changes are the most important ones of them all, so why not err on the safe side...

Here's a good article about engine break-in. Basically, opposite of what most manufacturers recommend. This technique will provide a better ring seal, and the engine will maintain more power over time....

The 10 hour break in period and service is to clean the fluids that collect the microscopic metal shards from a virgin engine and to ensure everything is running properly. Like Chris said, the first few are the most important but don't neglect any of the other scheduled maintenances and oil changes. NEVER A PROBLEM WITH MY LAST 1997 V-210 NOR MY 2006 V215.

I'm pretty sure that they changed the tranny fluids along with everything else like a typical service.

I didn't break my 06 V215 in and have had no problems. I didn't change any fluids for the first 50 hours engine and 100 hours V-dirve and Tranny. I'm sorry but I don't really buy the whole break in thing on these newer engines and fluids (unless their big time high performance). I may be in the minority with it but I do work with service techs everyday and they laugh when you bring it up.

The only thing to "break-in" on late model engines is the rings. Everything else is roller so no break in. No constant cruising at one speed at first or anything above 3500rpm for any length of time. Don't let it idle for long peiods at first either, you want to keep the oil pressure up. Put about an hour or so breaking in the rings by starting from a stop and coming up to 25 or 30mph then pull the throttle all the way back and let it settle all the way down. Repeat. This is the correct way to "seat" rings. And always, always get the factory oil and filter out of there at around 5 or 10 hours. This is just long enough to trap particles in the oil and filter that make it into the engine during the build. There is also assembly lube used during the build that mixes in with the oil and reducing it's protective qualities.

I actually did do the whole "changing of the rpm's frequently" for the first outing on the boat.

Sparky Jay is exactly right on the break in procedure. This is exactly what that article I posted talks about. This is what should be done with every brand new engine. The only thing that really needs to be done is seat the rings. Machining is so good these days that the other wear surfaces are perfect from the factory and you don't need to worry about breaking them in "easy" which is typically what that factory break in procedure is about.

Johnny my boat rocks!!! Was on water yesterday and wow, you and Danny tuned it great. danny even said once everything sets in bring it back and he will re tune it. I am glad I went there to Liquid Trends of SJ!!
