I was wondering if anyone has put the clear 3M tape on the back of their boats above the swim platform to protect it against people chipping the gel coat while putting on boards. How well does it stand up to the water and such thanks

Yeah ive always ran it. Usually change it out every couple years. It tends to get nicked up and sometimes starts to crinkle where it gets hit hard but thats just saving your boat.

Here Jason this is what I have. Apparently it comes in 3 or 5 inch. This is a good price too. http://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=73790&pdesc=TransomShield_Protectors _TransomShield_3_x_105&cname=Hardware&aID=24L&merc hID=1009&r=view If you look at the reflection of the transom on the end of the swim step that is where it is in the picture. The easy-to-install TransomShield is a shock-absorbing, clear, UV-stable urethane polymer that is only 12mm thick. Guaranteed not to yellow Holy crap, that is nearly 1/2 inch think. That has to be a typo.

I just put the 3m clear adhesive on. The only complaint I have is I wish I had put it on last year as soon as I purchase the boat.

I have the 3" TransomSheild (with 3M adhesive) on my transom, beginning last summer. It's pretty thick and hardly noticeable. I'm extremely impressed with it. When surfing last year I lost my balance and shot the board tip straight into the transom. I took a healthy nick out of the sticker but it did it's job and protected the gelcoat. I also got mine on clearance from Westmarine.com and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I tossed around the idea of making a teak transom protector but that would not have been 3" tall and wouldn't have helped on the "accident" I had with the surfboard.

Chad, I just used plain old 3M Clear Bra that I got from a friend that runs a sign shop. I put a patch about 6 inches high accross the transom and then put my Supra sticker right over it. On the gunwales I put it from the tower back to about the gas cap. If you are not familiar with the stuff have a pro install it or you will not be happy with the results. Go to a window tinting or automotive accessories place and they should be able to help you out. Most people have no idea I have it on my boat. You can see it after you wax the boat, cause you will see the wax line at the sticker, but then you take a tooth pick and pull out the wax and it is relatively unnoticeable unless you know it is there... I woiuld do it all over again if I have a colored hull

Newt, Ultimate Window Tinting also does the 3M clearbra. I have spoken to them about it and just need to get my boat over there so they can custom cut some pieces for it. It's a bit closer for us over here in Vancouver. Ultimate Window Tinting 6900 NE Highway 99 Vancouver, WA. 98665 (360)695-4444

I use the 3M clear strip too... 4" high x 36" long. It works really well and in 2 seasons has not begun to yellow. looks as new as new.
