It depends how the boat is set up. Most newer boats have a fitting on the transom to hook the garden hose into. Some have that piece down inside the engine compartment. If you don't have a place to hook the water hose into, you'll have to use a fake-a-lake, which is baically a plunger that wedges between the ground. The plunger part has a hose fitting on it to provide water to the intake while the boat is running. There is also a way to do it by hooking it into the v-drive cooling line, but I've never used that method. Someone else should be able to chime in on that one.
