Here is a good site to illustrate and explain knots. People can name them all day but if you dont have an illustration you can be clueless.

definetly a square knot or a tracing eight. I would just do a square less bulky. and it will hold just as good.

go to the link above and see the doulble fisermans knot...it is perfect for joining two pieces of like rope...when set, the knot is not real bulky either...dave
