I have never done the adjustment, but I need to, this is what a BU tech told me. Best to do in the water. Loosen big top nut, hand tighten only inside nut til water drips in at 5 to 10ish drips per minute, then tighten down large locking nut.

The lock nut is the small one and the adjusting nut is the large nut at the end, back off the lock nut then turn packing nut by hand to get the correct drip count, tighten lock nut up to packing nut.

Which nut is the adjusting nut, the one towards the stern or the one towards the bow?

the large nut is the adjuster and the thin nut is the lock nut on my boat(02 vlx). that would make it the one towards the bow.
