07 X Star Check Engine

I picked up an 07 Xstar. The oil was off the stick so we added a quart and a half to it prior to testing the boat.. Ran fine.. all temps and pressure good.. But the check engine would display in the window occationally.. I'd hit the display switch and it would go away for an hour or so.. Is this a latched fault that has to be cleared or do I have other probs that I don't know about yet?
