I have a 92 Sunsport with a decent sized trunk that could hold about 350 lbs of ballast. Only problem is the insert is made of plastic and could not support the weight. I think the older Sunsports had a fiberglass trunk, but the 92 has pretty flimsy plastic. The other problem is that the gas tank is directly below the trunk and I don't want to support the insert by putting weight on the gas tank. I was thinking about putting down a few layers of fiberglass over the insert to reinforce it. Any thoughts?

Is there any way to rotate the gas tank so it's vertical in 1/2 the trunk, then put the ballast on the floor next to the tank?

Bill K nailed it. My boy has got a 88 Mariah with the same set up. He lifted the gas tank into the ski locker area and loaded underneath. Works like a champ. How uses ski lockers anymore!

my 01 supra i bagged out the locker but its layed glass. if you want to do that you def need to build something sturdy, that box they gave you ain't gonna do it.

careful turning the tank, fuel pickup, guage sending unit, and fill line should be considered carefully. simply up and over wouldn't pose a lot of problems.

there are lot of different sized tanks you can get these days if you can't reposition the one ya got.

cool project!

Lifting the tank up is an interesting idea. Then I could expand the area under the rear seat to go under the gas tank as well. That way I could have 1 huge bag under the seat/gas tank rather than a small bag under the seat and a small bag in the trunk. I guess I'll have to consider the amount of work involved. Simply laying some glass/resin over my current insert seems awfully easy though.
