Never really paid much attention until this weekend while out on the water and noticed a drip drip drip from the propeller shaft about 8" down from the v drive unit. I think I have heard this is normal and if so how much is too much? Is it a slow drip or a steady drip drip drip? Or is this even normal? Too much beer today, hope I made a little sense. BTW, boat is a 03 Sanger V210.

It is not so much a problem of too much drip. Typically 1 drop every 10-15 seconds will suffice but too much is not a problem, the problem lies when there is too little water dripping. Then the shaft is not being lubricated like it is supposed to be.

JTW you don't say if it is with propshaft turning or stopped. turning it should drip about 6-10 drops per minute.a little more is ok, but stopped it should not drip, if so packing nut needs to be tightened... easy to do. great boat!

"stopped it should not drip" <Bad info if it uses packing. Now if it is a dripless packing it should not leak at all.

agreed PETER -- it should drip no matter if it is turning or stopped...

i had problems with this on my xlv last year, they would tighten it and it would back out and just start pissing water so the bilge would come on every 15mins or so. they replaced it with a dripless packing nut and it's been fine now

Where the shaft goes into the hull there is a nut that you tighten. I would take the tools and do it on the water so you can judge how much water is coming in.

If you keep tightening it and it still leaks then you need new packing rope inside of the nut.

From what I have read if I back off the locking nut and snug up the packing nut and then re tighten the locking nut I should be good unless the packing is shot and then new packing would be required.

You are correct.

Get the boat up to operating temp and then adjust one drip per second while just floating. Any less and you risk shaft damage. Any more and you have extra ballast. I prefer the extra ballast over a burned shaft.

brad, that sounds like a lot of drips. from what i understood, it was more like a drip every 5-10 seconds. i haven't checked this out and want to look at it this weekend.

Odd question here... doesn't the manufacturer address this in the owners manual?

Just curious.

I had always thought that only dd's non-drip less packings. All the v-drives that I have been on were drip less...learn something new everyday!

edit: We got replaced our packing system with a drip less system and I am so glad that we made the change. I have no idea why, but we could never get ours adjusted right and after 2 times out it was all out of wack.
