Impeller durability with frequent winter riding

I live in Texas and ride year round. This time of year I drain the block, V-drive, and strainer after every outing. So on each subsequent startup, the impeller is running dry (or at least not completely wet) for several seconds before water makes its way all the way to the impeller housing. Seems to me that this would put additional wear on the impeller. Does anyone have any insights on this (perceived) problem and do you do anything different to help protect the impeller? The only thing I can think of is to prefill the strainer before I start it up.

Some people say change every 2 yrs, some say every yr. They do make a "run dry" (by Globe I think) but I have heard that they dont circulate as well at idle.

I just install a new one in the spring when the riding season begins to pick up. Tuck the old one away as a spare. No worries this way.

I rode all year in Seattle for years & changed mine every two years without any problems.

I used to do the same thing as Bill (in the same lakes too!), nay a problem. After riding I'd do a quick winterize at the launch too (pull the drain plugs, blow the water out of the heater core, make sure the water is out of the shower...).

In my old boat, the impeller housing was pretty low in the engine area and the intake open to the stranier. So, I'm not sure there was much difference in the amount of water in the impeller housing between a drained block and not, once the boat is in the water for a few seconds before starting.

i too wonder about that.. have not gotten to ride since I drained... but wonder about that. I know last year when I replaced my impeller in spring, it came with vaseline type stuff to help with install and I assume that helps the first time you run the motor...
