I weigh 230 and I've been riding a 139 (small I know) it's def felt sluggish and what not. I just switched to my other board which is a 140.... I'm thinking about getting a 144, I was wondering how much of a difference would I feel between the 2?

142-144 will suit you the best.A 139 is too small.A 140 is marginal.

About 1.75 inches... hehe
Okay, but really. I'm 180 lbs on a heavy day, and I ride a 144 Viva. At 230, I would go no smaller than a 144. You'll notice more firm landings and your pop will improve as well over a smaller board. In reality, it's not a massive difference in size, and you may not notice an EPIC amount of difference, however, there will be a difference and it will definitely be for the positive. I believe you'll definitely enjoy the switch and only good things will come of it.

i was wondering the same thing i'm up around 220 - 215 trying to get back to 200 right now but my 140cm board seems to drag a little on me. Should i be going up to a 144 as well.

I would go for as long of a board as you can. I'm about 225lbs and I ride a 144. I think they should come out with a board that is closer to 150 for the big guys. I ride a snowboard that is 163cm and I will buy one that is even longer next time. You notice you won't dig the nose on a cut and deep starting is a bit easier with the bigger surface area to plane.

Seriously though, you wont notice much. I think a larger board is a bit easier to land on, less going out the front. Swing weight might feel a bit difference. AA always rides a large board in chop. I would bet the board will seem fast opposed to slower. Most eveyone I ride with rides a board that is a bit longer that the suggested size. I am all about that. Look at Dean Smith, He is like 3 feet tall and rides a 140 something.

Jess, I'd hit up the 144 without a doubt, you won't be disappointed. Heck, I'm 180 lbs, and I LOVE my 144.

Does it really make that big of a difference in a novice rider. I've been out maybe 15-20 times over the last 6 years. This will be my first summer with a boat and i live 1 minute from where its docked so i plan to go out a ton. I would like to master a backroll and a 360 at the very least this summer. but i'm still learning wake to wake jumping right now... Hell just jumping in general. So would i really be able to tell?

Yeah, the more the board floats and the less you have to work to edge into the wake wiht speed the easier it will be to advance. If you're sinking you have to edge more aggressively from the start which hurts your line tension. Also you get less tired the better your board floats. I'm around 230, I typically cut down to 220 by summer, and I wish they made larger boards than 144, there are a few 146s. They just don't make boards for guys our size.

Jess,
It'll make a difference regardless of how experienced a rider you are. The difference between a "novice" rider and an "experienced rider" is how quickly they'll notice the difference. You may not be able to tell a TON of difference between the two for a while. However, it will be benefiting you. In theory, you should land more solidly, and also it should have a positive influence on your pop.

Jess, I just re-read your post, and noticed that you'll be going out much much more this year. Get the bigger board and start the new path on the right foot. You won't regret it. It can only help.

I'm about 200+ and recommend a longer deck. It will feel so much better to know that you have the right sized deck for you...no more excuses right!

Move those bindings out!! Second hole in or all the way out. There is no way you want it that narrow.

Brandon, how tall are you? Have you ever done squats in a weight room? You want your feet shoulder width apart, ATHLETICALLY on your board similar to if you were doing a squat. That will also help! If you're on a board that big I'm guessing you'll be on either the last hole or one in.

Yeah I'm 6'1... I've done plenty of squats... I guess I was always told and thought that you wanted your bindings more towards the back and so having that front binding wider out always seemed weird to me... But hey I'm gonna give it a try next session

Not really following you on that. If you are talking about one binding further out than the other, don't do that. move them both out to the last hole probably since you are 6'1'', try it at the second hole from the end if you want to start there, but i'd go ahead and move them all the way out if i were you. you'll have more control over the board.

you want them centered so can ride switch better. you don't need them all the way out either. try different stances till you find what you like. super wide stances can put strain on your knees. I ride fairly narrow and ducked all the way out. I'm also 6'1

Brandon,
feel out what is best for your knees. Your each binding should be equidistant from tip and tail (centered) and your feet will be roughly the same amount of duck, based on what feels good. The reason I mentioned the weight squat is because when you do them (properly) your wide base allows your knees to bend and handle the weight. Your wake stance should roughly emulate that.
I'm also 6'1 and ride a 144 Viva, this is my stance. (I'm now on the 2012 Viva and 2011 Cells, but the stance didn't change.)

yeah i widened my stance like you guys said.... and with the new size board(going from a 139 to a 144 at 230lbs) my riding today was a complete night and day difference.....it was so much easy to pop off the wake, hold my edges and just ride... thanks for the advice guys!

2009 Ronix Viva. I may have a chance to pick up a 144 Ronix Viva. Going to try and get the guy in the neighborhood of 100 bucks. Would this board be a good step up for me from my Hyperlite Premier 140cm?

Jess,
It wouldn't be bad, but it's going to have a few different riding characteristics. It'll definitely be a faster ride. I think you'll like the rocker on it though. It's consistent, very much like the premier. Is there anything specific you'd like to know?

Well my 140 seems a little loose to me. But i dont ride with the fins on it. (B/c i dont have them) And all this talk on here about it being night and day between a 144 and a 140 makes me think it would probably be better just to bite the bullet and get a larger board than to try fins on my premier and keep falling behind the rate i could be progressing at.

Vast majority of the time, it will not hurt to go to a bigger board. As far as being locked in, that's something that's got more to do with the shape and fin construction of the board. I know the Viva is pretty locked in, the rounded edges through the belly let you play a little but, but overall it's a fairly locked in ride. I enjoyed my 09 and learned several new tricks on it.
