i have an 315 hp merc with 85 hours, how often should i change the impellor as am hearing different stories from boat shops here.bought boat new last year, still has original one in. also, how hard is it to change on vdrive, thanks
I had the shop do mine at about 85 hours when I had it in for some warranty work. They recommended to me that it should be changed for the first time at 100 hours.
They say every 100 hours but it's not necessary. Once a season should be good though as long as you are using your boat a lot and not reving the motor like a JA on the trailer.
It's pure muscle work. Get yourself two pair of needle-nose vice grips, a 6 pack, and some patience. The four letter words fly for about an hour when I'm removing the impeller. V-drive are a pain.
On the mercruiser its much easier to remove the pump and change the impeller on the workbench, remove the hoses, loosen the belt, remove two bolts that hold the pump on.
