Just curious on how much the speed of the winch line is changed as the size of the reel increases? Is it worth putting extra components into the system to maintain a constant line speed correlation the engine RPM? I have a blown up generator with a like new Honda 9 HP so I am going to build a winch and have an idea to not have the reel size affect the line speed. It requires some more parts, so not sure if the extra money in parts is worth it? Just looking for some input from winch users and if there might be some value in the concept.

Thanks for the help.

In my opinion I think the change in speed due to the spool getting larger with the extra rope being wound in is not significant enough to make the mechanics more complicated. On mine I specified and built it so my desired speed was with an empty spool. This way when the spool grows larger and larger you can always slow down your engine. I just dont think the change is great enough to be bothersome.

Hey Jim is the shaft on your motor taperd or keyed? I got a motor off a blown up gen. but the shaft is taperd and i was wondering if you knew how to make the gears fit without a lot of work.

I haven't been able to get the stator off the shaft yet. Maybe I have more of a project than I thought. Just in the thinking stages at the moment, but when I get the shaft free I may find more of a challenge. Thanks for the input so far.
