I know a ton of threads are on this, but a quick question. I have taken out some small surface scratches with some 600 and 1000 grit sand paper. Now I'm left with dull spots where the scratches were, like the finish is gone. What is my next steps. Polishing compound, rubbing compound? Help please.

I would use polishing compound with a wool pad. Then finish with polishing compound and foam pad. I would also try 2000 grit next time, takes a little longer but buffs easier.

3M Finesse polishing compound with a foam pad is the best combination I have found.

I second the 3M Finesse suggestion. That's good stuff.

Do you need a polisher or buffer for the polishing compound or can it be done by hand?

With using 600 or 1000 you will need a rotary buffer.

Thanks guys for the help. Sounds like I should have tried a higher grit paper to start with. Thank goodness it is only a few spots on the transom. I've been thinking of getting one of these. http://www.autogeek.net/bupo.html

Maybe its time now. Anyone have experience with these?

You can buff it out by hand, it can be alot of work depending on size and depth of marks.

I don't have the Porter Cable, I made the mistake of buying a Craftsman 2 speed angle buffer. The Porter Cable get great reviews and that is what I would buy if I could go back.

Gel coat is much easier to buff than clear coat on a car or truck. Doesn't burn or swirl if you work on slow speed.
