liquid force trip 146. the trip is very forgiving, which makes it a great beginner board, and it will also give him plenty of room to progress

for sure. my dad started on a trip, and had no problem learning the basics, but you also see videos of pro riders riding them.

to be honest, i personally dont like the trip, but i also rode it with the center fin in, and i ride a lyman finless, so im a fan of a really loose board. which might be a big factor why i didnt like the trip.

Try the hyperlite state 145 nice board to start out on. Once you get the hang of it remove the center fin and let loose. I have no complaints with mine and the price is reasonable.

I'm 6'5", 250 lbs, and I am currently riding the Lyman 143 and absolutely love it. As a beginner, I think your buddy would enjoy the hyperlite Motive 144. The board is one of Shaun Murray's older shapes from around 2001. It was previously called the Belmont. I rode that board for years and had a great time on it. The hyperlite board is fairly inexpensive and you could probably pick up a board and binding package for around $200.

not trying to jack the thread but im a big guy and ive been riding a witness 144 and i loved it. it is also for sale for 120 shipped. it is forgiving for beginners but it wont hold you back from progressing.

Big guy here - HL Marek 144. Now as a foam core will be more reasonably priced. Sickest board I have ever road.

I'm a big guy too... currently about 248 lbs. at just a hair under 6' tall. I ride an O'brien Natty 144. Couldn't be happier. Fast and loose (but hooks up great) and really, really light for a bigger board.
I also spent a couple weeks demo'ing a 142 Sine board this summer and it rode VERY nicely for me. Tons of pop and super soft landings.
