I'm a complete audio newbie but my friend and I made 4 speaker cans. He insisted that they should have holes in the back and I didn't think they should. Now they are all done and there are quarter sized holes in the back of the cans. When they are playing a bunch of air gets shot out the holes. Should I try and fill them up or is this good? Thanks

Some speakers sound better in ported enclosures, as long as the holes are big enough so they dont whistle it is fine. The only other concern would be moisture. From my experience smaller speakers such as 6.5" found in most tower speakers sound better in sealed enclosures. I made my own cans this weekend out of 6" PVC and they sound awsome!

Yeah they are 6.5". They don't whistle. But I think the closed does sound better. Thanks

Seal them back up. You obviously do not have the Thiele and Smalle parameters for your speakers that tell you what size box and then what port size and length. You have just introduced a random resonance to your system along with potential cancellation issues with your front going sound waves and maybe even sound cancellations caused by the income air from the boat moving.
