I would like to change my oil before the weekend. My owners manual recommends 25W-40, and I have always used Mercruisers brand in the past. I live more than hour away from Dallas, and my local retail options for oil are AutoZone, Kwik Kar, and WalMart. They don't have 25W-40, which must be a marine grade; they have all the standard stuff for cars. I have 1 quart left of the Mercruiser. What would be the next best option, or should I hold off until I can get the recommended grade? I'm in Texas, it's hot, and my boat does all it's work at 480 feet above sea-level.

mobil 1 15w-50 according to mobils website is an acceptable substitute for 25w-40. Ive run this oil in a merc 5.0/305 with no problems. This should be available at most of the locations you listed.

Wal-mart carries Shell Rotella in their automotive depatartment. This meets the standard requirements for Indmar engines (not sure what kind of engine you have?)

This is what I put in my Supra. Trust me, I went to Shell's website and verified that it met all of the same standards that my Indmar manual required.

Wal-mart also carries marine Penzoil 15w-40. It is located in the sporting goods department with the boating stuff.

Seems mobil has changed their oil choices but this meets the specs listed in the indmar manual on line http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_Truck_SUV_5W-40.aspx

I went with 15W-40. The guy at the oil change place said in our climate the lower number is meaningless, since I won't operate the boat in cold temps. I also have heard not to switch to synthetic oil once you are well into engine life; something about the smaller molecular structure affecting seals and gaskets. I have a 5.7L Merc 300hp w/ 275 hours.

I run Mobil 1 Delvac 1300 15W40. It is an excellent oil and meets all requirments for Indmar.

I run the Rotella in my MC. The specs were fine and it seems to be a favorite with big rig diesel owners.
