First off I would like to thank everyone for the great info I have recieved being a "lurker" on this site for some time now. My crew and I are getting better and now doing inverted tricks, so I am looking at upgrading our ride.

I have a low budget due to new baby, but want to upgrade to an inboard from an I/O. Can anyone tell me about
1. An '86 sunsport's wake,(and if you know if it is the same hull as a launch)
2. How it would compare at maintainig speed vs. an I/O (without perfect pass)
3. About how much would it cost to get a perfect pass to install myself. Thanks in advance for your help. -Nick

nick,

86 sunsport with a tower and some ballast bags is the exact same wake as the original launch. The speed should be quite a bit earier to hold on that boat compared to an i/o. However the perfecr pass can not be beat once you try it, it is tough to pull people without it. Perfect pass cruise i believe can be had for 600.00 or so, but the pro model is 1K. Both are easy to install if you have the guts to put a hole in the bottom of your boat. If you have access to an 86 sunsport that runs good at a good price i would jump on it as does the original launch with enough weight it throws one of the best wakes around.

Hi Nick, an 86 Sunsport would throw a very nice wake if weighted correctly. A friend of mine had an 87 and that boat got me started on the Sunsport series. After riding in his boat, I ended up buying a 96 Sunsport because the wake was so nice. The boat is very deep with lots of storage, however, the quality of boats in the 80s was not what it is now. Be sure to check for rot in the stringers and floor. Check the engine and ask if they have service records for the boat, if not, ask about any problems with the engine. Be sure to check the floor under seats and around the edge of the engine compartment, as these are likely places for rot. I know my friend's boat had a soft spot in the floor which had to be repaired. There are lots of things to check with older boats, just take your time and be sure its a solid boat.
Feel free to email me about weighting it, or any other questions you may have about the boat.

Went and looked at it today. It is in pretty good condition. Seats are drying out but not cracking as of yet (original vinyl). No rot in the floor boards or stringer at the engine mounts (but needs new interior carpet). The bunks on the trailer are in pretty bad shape. Other than that it is very! clean for being almost 20 years old.

Asking price is $8500. NADA is $6,800, and I figure it is going to take about 3 grand to put tower on it, fix vinyl (in next year or so), and do the trailer bunks. Seems a little high to me, but what do you think? Can I get a newer, better boat for $10-12,000?

Here is the URL: http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/8/0/74027180.htm

Thanks for your help.
PS, I am in no hurry to buy, so I can keep looking.

that one looks hella clean but double check the floor especially towards the vey back.the way way they were designed, water was able to get under the floor(since the rear was not sealed) & penetrate the stringer system.i beleive there is a test you can do to test for the rot.someone on here should know.anywaze here's what you can do w/ an 86'.With a full boat or some sacs the wake is fine.late
