exactly why I have the single worst tow vehicle on that forum. 1997 Silverado single cab pickup. Paid for in cash, $6700. Would rather spend my money on the boat.

Google adsense pays for my boat every month.

Thank you, google! :-)

Not really sure who is going to pay for gas this year though.

KStateAlumni is correct otherwise. Being 27, I look back and think how cool it would have been to be rolling behind a hot boat at like, 19, but here is the reality -- at 19 you can't or at least shouldn't be spending $60k on a wakeboard boat.

My boat and truck together probably cost less than some of the stereo systems that people have in their boats. Get what you can afford and have a great time. If you want a great wake look for a Nautique 2001. If you want a boat that you can take a group out and party with I/Os arent all bad.
I have a 92 Ford and an 82 Nautique and probably have just as much as someone with an 07 Escalade and 07 X-star. Don't get me wrong I would love to have new stuff but I do not think it would effect the amount of time or how I enjoy my time on the water in the slightest way.

I'm a public school teacher, so not in the high salary range. Here are my tips if you're not in the high salary range:

Don't max out your mortgage-live comfortably, but make sure you have plenty of disposable income each month for FUN. Buy a new or used boat with a fixed rate home equity loan so you can deduct the interest.

Don't buy new cars. Cars are transportation-only. You can't pull a blind 3 behind a nice car, so who cares what it looks like. Life is good without a care payment.

Become an educated individual investor. You can do really well in the market to pay for your toys if you have the time and nerves.

My personal belief is that you need to decide how you want to live each day and live it that way. If your job doesn't allow you that, get a new job. Also, you don't need a NEW boat if you can't afford one, and it doesn't need to be a v-drive to be a good wake boat, e.g. the 2001. Watch some old videos when all the boats used to be direct drives and everyone still went huge. Good luck-live your dreams and never grow up!

Understand your priorties!!!!Fun on the water if you love it. It's true many people get upsidedown in their boat and mortage. I went 10 years without a boat while kids were little and worked a lot. When the time was right i got my MC. Paid cash!!! For the fun of being on the water it really doesn't matter what you have. My sone can do damnear any trick he wants in our Prostar190. The one i love watching are the ones in the new boats TRYING to get up on the board. I would say that 75% of the people out there don't need that 3' tall wake, it is all technique. And with the new boards, even better. So in my opinion no bling just a solid tournament boat and a truck to get it to the water.....but go in debt if you wish money is cheap now but look to see what it will cost in the end.

-Work 40 hr a week "career job" to pay for life with out a boat.
-work second job bartending/serving two nights a week to make boat payments and gas money
-cut back on the weekend partying and drinking and there is another $300-$400/month to put toward a boat

some people say it's stupid to take out a big loan and pay the interest. but if i didn't have the boat i wouldn't have a second job. so decided i'd rather have a second job (until the "career" starts to pay more) and have a boat which will make memories that will last forever. you can make enough $$$ in about 2-4 nights of serving/bartending to make your payments...not to bad.

Learn the rule of 72

Investment performance 10%

72/10 = 7.2 years your money will double

Earn 12%, investment doubles every 6 years.

Of course if you owe a credit card and are paying 18%, your debt doubles every 4 years.

Checkout how that works stock MA (MasterCard)

The point is we can't afford our boats. The bank dose. So we pay the minimum payment to make it seem like we own our boats. By the time we are done we pay 80k for our 50k boats. But no need to worry, we will have a new boat by then. If not, the ridicious apprication of our house,(which the bank owns as well) will pay for a new boat next year. right?

Thanks Danny. Ya, ceiling was not cheap. That, along with the rest of the cabinetry/millwork in that house, was well over $500k. Hell, the dog house is 300sqft. with heating/AC, hot and cold running water and yes, custom cabinets.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm a Nevadan through and through. Battle Born baby! My boss is O.K. even though he is a Malibu guy.

Nickypoo,

How big was that house? I do tiered ceilings in almost all the main rooms in my houses, w/ hidden rooms behind bookshelves leading down to wine cellars/storm cellars and such. Usually dual radiused stair cases 6-8" crown and base throughout w/ radiused doors and wood windows, which are obviously cased out. Usually maple, w/ some alder scattered in, and sometimes burled maple. My houses start out around 6,000 sq. ft. but average about 12,000. It's rare to see a house w/ a trim bill (labor and materials) over 200K. Usually more like 100K. And I have one of the most expensive trim carpenters in my state. Trust me when I say, my trim work is totally decked out.

I'm looking at that work, and not saying it's not good work... I just don't see anything to extravagant there. Definately not $500K worth of materials... Of course I'm saying this not knowing the sq. footage of the house. But even on a 20,000 sq ft. house I just finished, our trim bill barely topped $300K, and we had alot of burled maple in that house.

Since Danny above is from my state, the majority of my stuff is in Gaillardia, Fairview Farms, and Nichols Hills. He can vouch about the houses in these areas. Assuming he's from the metro area.

Is the price difference of labor and materials that much higher in Nevada?

i think he was talking about the total price of the whole house, at least that is the way i took it. yeah ive done 2 Gaillardia houses and they were unbelievable and the trim bill labor and mat. was under 100k. Your trim carpenter wasnt Wes Tillison by chance was it.
Old     (tanner)      Join Date: Oct 2005       04-10-2007, 6:45 PM Reply
O, I took it that he meant the trim bill was that, and my jaw dropped.

As for my trim crew...No sir... my trim guy is Tommy Boggs. It used to be Tommy and his brother James. James just does commercial work now. Tommy used to do all of Jim Quiqly's work and D.E. Roberts. But he's been pretty much exclusive for me and and my father for the last 15 or so years... except for when the schedule doesn't line up right and he takes a house to hold him over.

Who'd you do the work for over in Gaillardia?

I'll try and get you boys some pics of a kitchen I recently designed that I'm pretty proud of :-). Except my painters have just finished shooting lacquer and are painting right now, so they have all the cabinets covered in plastic. I'll see what I can't do though.

That house was in the 10,000 ft. range. The bill was for cabinets/doors/millwork. Cabinets alone were around $325k. The only shot of those 3 that was actually of that house is the second one.

Here's one shot of the some of the beams we fabricated in house and another shot of the office.

Wow guys, y'alls work is beautiful. Nick, I've worked with some of the best trim carpenter's in Florida, and I couldn't possibly brush your work off as being mediocre.

My Dad owns an insurance restoration company. He does fire, water, and wind damage. I'm just starting to work with him doing estimates and running jobs, which will count as my 2 years as a foreman toward my general contractors license. Once I have that, I become a partner, which means by 22/23 I might be buying a house like the one above.

Here are the only 2 pictures I could really find. These are of the living room in my old house. My Dad did a complete remodel of the whole house that took him almost a full year because of the detail. All the wood is solid oak. The pilars and one of the bar tops are Cypress. The other bar top is Red wood. Both bar tops were hand shaped from 8" thick boards. You can see a bit of the kitchen in one picture... that was the only thing he left standing during the remodel because it would have cost over $100k to recreate. You can see a look through window between the kitchen and living room...that was originally an outside window. We added almost 1200 square feet to the house.

I'll try to find pictures of the rest of the house to show how extensive the remodel was, and next week I'll get some pictures of the fire jobs we're working on, then some when we finish in a few weeks.
