Anyone know how to build a winch? How much would it run about?
Thanks John

i think there are a few threads on this already that you can search for. also i am pretty sure there are some plans you could google. but all and all i have heard that it can be nearly as expensive as just buying one, plus, unless you are pretty crafty or know someone that is, the hand built winch may not perform as well... like having torque converters and breaks and such that work better or are just easier to use
...
this is just what i have heard, i am definitely not a "crafty" guy myself and could never build one

good luck

pulldozer and grinch winches seem to be the top two winches people use... at least from what i have gathered mostly from this site

http://www.myspace.com/pulldozer

some places you can buy the frame to make your own winch or even long rolls of line like bulletlines.com

Make sure you have good tools before you start and enough spare time to see it through. Winchskating.com def helps.

What parts are needed

By price...
spectra,
torq-a-verter,
engine,
steel,
wheels,
sprockets,
chain,
pillow blocks,
misc parts...

you could opt for a centrifugal clutch instead of the TAV but you may not be able to deep water start.

As far as the engine, 6.5 hp is apparently the best. Any larger and it gets heavier and you won't want to pull it into those hard to get places.

If you're interested, I could maybe sell you some Spectra. I have 1000' feet and usually only use about 300-400'.
