Anyone surf behind an Epic? Seen one clip on YouTube and that's it. They did not get into the 4000k of ballast. Saw these two going south bound last week and thought I would ask.

I know this has got to be a dumb question. But where are the holes for the ballast. I though they were on the back. Are they hiding behind the trim tab or something. I just don't see them I guess. Really like the boats. If I could ever justify spending that much on a new one and curb the wife's infatuation with Malibu's and there illusion towers I would love to upgrade to one.

I've surfed behind one once, the wave was crazy tall and steep, but a short pocket. However, we were trying to dial it in as no one had surfed behind it before. From the people I have spoken with about it, it can throw a mean wake with a good pocket with maybe 500 lbs. of lead. Some in the bow and some in the surf side corner (along with factory ballast filled up) Look for DennisH on here, he was in charge of setting up the Epics they rode at the NorCal wakesurf contest a few months back.

You can see the three fill holes and their wire mesh grates on the back underneath the trim tab pistons, with the middle one showing . The surf wake is absolutely insane when you first see it, really steep almost to the point that it becomes hard to stay in the sweet spot. A little messing with the trim tab can mellow it out though. Heres a couple pics from a few weeks ago (front and left tanks stock ballast only).

Man I just got mine and Im in love with it, Full front and surf side with some ppl and its really good. Matt also told me that if u fill the off side just a little it helps, and put the tab at 25%.

We've been surfing full front and side with trim tab at 3/4 up, about 10.5 - 10.8mph and turning slightly to take away the steepness and make the pocket longer. I also learned about the tip that Twitch got to fill the off side ballast a bit. I'll be testing that out tonight and will report back.

Here's a video we did earlier in the year. The surfing setup is what I posted earlier:

The surf wave doesn't look all that special to me, could be different in person who knows. Not sure why they have to turn in a complete circle with that boat, is that necessary to get a good wave out of it?

nu bu, in that video, the surfer is 6'2" tall and we had 2 people in the boat, factory ballast. You can surf it straight but the wave is steep. Going in a giant circle smooths out the transition.

Twitch if you've been trying to surf an X-star I can see why you're such a fan of the surf wave on this boat. Doesn't look to impressive to me. I doubt anything can touch the wakeboard wake though.

Epics could be the greatest surfboat in the world, but they would need to re-do their transom. All great surfboats all have similar deep v-transoms. My bet is they have one out next year or maybe after that. I think they are freaking awesome looking, and I would love it if they changed the hull design a little.

The angles are almost at 90.

I just look at the back of a Sanger which I thought the transom was somewhat standard and you are right, the Epic's transom is flatter! Maybe this way for the 4000k of ballast???

Well, I couldn't get the Epic out of the garage last night. They're redoing our streets and they just poured new curbs right in front of my driveway.

So, we went out on a friends 2009 Malibu VRide. I couldn't believe the differences in performance and I originally came from a VLX to the Epic. That VRide was an absolute dog. Super slow out of the hole, lots of bow rise and a wake that washed out easily from the rider(lots of boat rock). The criuse control was a pain in the arse, having to turn it on every time the boat was restarted. The surf wake was really tiny with little power and we had the boat full of people.

This is obviously just my opinion and I'm not trying to plug Epic here. Heck, my favorite wake of all time is the old school SANTE 210.

I guess the old saying is true: You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.
