My experience is that it's almost all in the take-off. For a regular roll, my cut *at the wake* is slightly less than for a roll to revert and I stand up more as I leave the wake. Handle position is the remainder of the difference, but is less critical than the slight difference in body position as I leave the wake. I use the same handle position for both tricks, but on the r to r, I let go with my lead hand about 3/4 of the way through the rotation and move my back hand (with handle) to the back of my trailing thigh.
