black gelcoat

We're currently in the process of ordering an 06 X-1 and our only dilemma is the gelcoat colors. I want to do a black hull just because it looks so nice and different from most boats on our lake (white) but have had mixed feeling about it. I know the black gets hot in the sun but that's not too much of a problem because you don't touch the sides of the boat too much and the deck will be a different color. For those of you who have black or partially black boats, what have your experiences been with appearance, waterspots, fading, scratches etc.??

just keep it wiped down each time and lots of guys on here use 50/50 vinegar/water mix to get rid of water spots and just wipe it down with. keep it waxed and clean and it is the best color in my opinion. You just have to put in a little more care than standard.

When do you need it? I hear production for X-1's will be limited to what's already ordered, and that won't happen until early March. Make them guarantee you have a slot if you need it before April- and to answer your question- black is sweet. Sure it show water spots, etc. but you have to be 12 inches away to tell, and when you're using it, all it is is sweet looking. Black is also very resaleable, so buy what you like and enjoy.

IMO - it's all about you. Are you willing to put in the time to keep up with it? It will be more work. It will look bad a$$. Just like a black vehicle, if kept up, there's nothing like it.

When I managed a pro-shop - I was turned on to a product called Rejex - it is a polymer based product that is used in place of wax. In heavy boat use, it lasts a good month and you don't have to worry about build up. It is super easy to apply and wipes/buffs off simply. We were on Lk Lewisville which has horrible mineral deposits/water spots, lots of spiders leaving their black marks etc... When the boats were treated with this stuff, these marks just wiped off with a wet towel. We had a Cobalt buyer use it once on his new boat before he got his reg decals - he came in after getting his numbers and said he couldn't get them to stick! I don't know how much distribution this company has, they are based here in the Dallas area. I use it on my Tahoe and our shop boat.

Gotta love the color black on any part of a boat.. Shines like no other color(unless you have metal flake of course..LOL0, but definetly requires a little more cleaning and maint. Scratches do sho easier and I am finding the bunks dull the black fast. But who cares no one sees wahts under the bunks right?..LOL

Kevin's exactly right about the bunks...but it's not that bad. As far as cleaning, no matter what color you get...you'll most likely be cleaning/wiping a ton.

Thanks for all the input guys, I think I'm going to go with the black hull. And Muffintop; I have a production slot reserved for the X-1 and up here in Michigan we won't be able to ride till late April anyway.

No problems with black. It does not get very hot here so no problems with water spots.

I haven't had any issues with my black. I wipe it down after every use and apply 303 every now and then to keep the shine up. I have had it for a couple years now and it still has a nice shine.

FOr what its worth..I really liked the black when I ordered my boat, but didnt do the entire hull black because of my concerns of keeping it clean. Most people who own $50,000 wake boats are gonna take pride, and whipe it down, apply wax in the winter, etc..regardless of the color. I found that the black is no harder to keep clean then any other color. If I could do it all over again, I would have gone with a solid black hull. That pic of the X1 looks SIC.

WildBill, were you considering powdercoating the tower black or was that someone else. I thought i remember something like that in the works and was wondering how that came out. Maybe it was PLaneDoc or something like that? Either way, your boat is badd.
We have a black X30 and it does show scratches easier than the white, but it sure looks good when clean.

Well, here is a 20 year old black gelcoat. Has some scars and fading but still the best color combo of the 2001's in my opinion.

there is a solid black LSV, no graphics on the lake we go to most. It looks purple. With nothing to contrast it to, and a little water on it, it just looks purple

The bottom and transom are black and I was worried when it was ordered that it would be a problem but it's been just as easy to keep looking good as any other boat I've had. I did have a "dock incident" that scraped the gelcoat about 1/2" wide by 8" on a rear corner in the black area. Good news was a black marker was enough to hide it until I got it repaired :-)

I did a solid Black VLX afew years back, On the trailer it looked spectacular, but you couldn't see it very well across the lake, and MY GOD THE WATERSPOTS. SO the next boat was all white, even the tower, absolutely gorgeous
