Does the 80-200 even work in the D40? I thought you needed AF-S type lenses.

Don't take my word for it though...I have a D200 not a D40

Hey Bakes

The Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens

will work with the D40 and almost any camera with a nikon lens mount.

AF= autofocus
S= silent wave focusing motor which is only about 10% faster than the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Lens .

Doesn't Nikon offer VR on that lens now?

I thought that the D40 did not have a focusing screw to focus lenses that do not have motors....which I am under the impression that the 80-200 does not. (Does not have a focusing motor that is)

If it does work on the D40, the 80-200 2.8 has a great reputation

Anyways, sorry if I am spreading mis-information. Maybe someone else can chime in and settle this.

The "new" Nikon is the 70-200VR 2.8 It is a great lens. Just picked one up a couple of weeks ago

rich, i believe it's the 80-300 that has the vr.

Did you mean 70-300mm or 80-400mm

Here's a list:

The 70-300vr is an ok lens. Definitly not in the same class as the 70-200vr or the 80-20036 2.8

The 80-200 is a great lens. They were the work horses at the paper I used to work for. Great lens, and at that price I am pretty sure it will be gone rather quickly.

Nikon does make a 70-200VR 2.8 lens that replaced the 80-200. It is an amazing lens and is what I have been rocking for about a year now. Quite the spendy price point though. If your shooting JUST sports with it you can get away with the 80-200 easily.

Ryan- Correct info.I have the 70-200 2.8 VR too, which syncs very well with the D2X.
A shot of the recent Eclipse shot with the VR is attached

Hey Joe, how are you?

Bakes- All AF lenses have a focusing motor of some kind, unless they are only a manual focus lens. The AFS is a silent wave motor & just a little faster.

Randy- Call me when you know your schedule.

Does anyone have the Nikon 14mm 2.8? A sportsshooter.com member wants to trade.
There are some good deals on there sometimes.

Very nice shots Barry. Looks like I need to do a little more research on lens design.

I still stand by my "the 80-200 will not work with the D40" stand though. Granted, it will mount up and take great pics, but you will be losing the autofocus capabilities. Here is the info from Nikons D40 site

Compatible Lenses*1: Nikon F mount with AF coupling and AF contacts Type G or D AF Nikkor
1) AF-S, AF-I: All functions supported
2) Other Type G or D AF Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus
3) PC Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/2.8D: Can only be used in mode M; all other functions supported except autofocus
4) Other AF Nikkor*1/AI-P Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D Color Matrix Metering II
5) Non-CPU: Can be used in mode M, but exposure meter does not function; electronic range finder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster
6) IX Nikkor lenses cannot be used
*1. Excluding lenses for F3AF

In the effort of clearing up the lens compatibility issue, here is what I have found.

-- Not all Nikon autofocus lenses have motors built into them.
-- AF-S and AF-I lenses have internal motors
-- AF and AF-D lenses use a focusing screw driven by the camera. No lens based motors here.
-- The D40 will not be able to utilize the autofocus capabilities of non AF-S and non AF-I lenses

If anyone disagrees I would like to see the reference.

Good research Bakes
dpreview is a good site to ask questions & gain knowledge.
I have never used a D40 and did not know the limitations it has.
The D40/D60 will not autofocus with the 80-200 f2.8 AFED.
Thanks for clearing that up.
