What do you think of this alternative?

I know that Google, Microsoft, Apple and Amazon are in an arms race to get these digital lockers up and running. As a guy who hates to pay for any kind of subscription service - this provides little value to me personally. I have a NAS of 1T at my Dad's house in Seattle. I back-up/access all of my digital files on any device to my NAS and he does the same to the NAS at my house at no cost other than the hardware.

For those people who struggle to back up their files - this is a pretty good solution but it gets pretty expensive in my opinion.

With Apple being the clear leader in digital music and devices, things are going to get interesting. Google is coming on strong with Amazon partnerships and the Android system. It's only going to get better. and cheaper.

Not sure how much this subscription is, but I wouldn't jump on it personally. pry be free in 2 years. Good technology tho.

I just started using this but there is no subscription required for your first 5gigs of music. I really like the idea. You can stream it from the site or just download it to any of your devices. I bought a song today, stored it in the cloud and my phone then logged in on my wifes phone and stored it there too. The only thing that sux is all the previously purchased songs (over 100) aren't available to store in the cloud. I'm a fan and love pulling further and further away from Apple.

The usefuleness is limited. What if you're on bart (or walking down the street in plain sight, in the case of AT&T) without cell coverage? The cloud isn't doing you much good - better have your music stored locally on your device.

As far as backup goes, www.carbonite.com - doesn't get cheaper than that for unlimited storage.

I just got an email from Amazon saying that if you buy an album you get bumped to 20 gigs for free. I'd never stream the music from the site but rather always save it there and download it locally. I just really like the idea of how easy it makes it to share it with the rest of my devices.

wes, you better not need that music anytime soon. Carbonite's download time can drag especially if your files have any size.
