I need some part cross references for a 2005 Moomba GG XLV. I pulled the distributor cap yest. as the boat was running really rough, dumping fuel out the exhaust, and four of the plugs were soaked with gas, two dumped fuel out of the hole when I pulled the plugs. The dist. cap posts were cover in corrosion, see pic. I put in new plugs but my local auto parts store has no way of crossing the distributor cap over.

Also, what causes this corrosion? The boat ran fine on labor day and then sat until the day before yest. Please help!!!

it is caused by moisture , if you do not open the eng compartment to let it dry out iv seen this alot in the spring after boat have set a wile

I wonder why they don't make the dist. cap with a rubber o-ring base seal to keep the moisture out. I left the engine compartment open for 3 days after labor day but I am sure the corrosion was starting before that, it just allowed it to build up to problem causing amounts in the last 5 weeks. Here in FL, with 80-90% humidity it would probably happen no matter what when not used for a while.

I sanded the corrosion off of the posts and put in new spark plugs but now I have to wait for the bat. to charge as all of the turning over trying to find the problem has drained them down. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

Anyone know a cross reference for the dist. cap for the 5.7l 350ci 340hp Indmar motor? This would be very helpful!!! Thanks

Mercruiser changed to a vented cap to reduce this problem.

I didn't think of that, I guess that would work as well. I wonder if drilling a couple of small holes near the bottom of the cap to allow for a little air flow would help.

Greg,

Did cleaning the distributor cap post's solve your problem?

The dist. cap was the small part of the problem. The big part, that was actually the whole problem at the time as the boat would run with the corroded dist, is the ECU. Something went wrong in the computer that was causing the FI to dump way too much gas in the motor. So much so that it doubled the amount of oil in the motor from seeping past the cylinders. Hopefully on Mon. when the new ECU shows up the boat will run as it should.
