anything can be done with enough weight. I have a Malibu direct drive and surf it every weekend. Here's my setup:

440lb behind the engine
440lb next to engine
350lb in the ski locker
150 lead in the bow on surf side
150 lead on surf side, mid boat
150 lead in rear surf side.

Oh, and the wedge is down.. Malibu thing...Upload

Weight, in one corner, and lot's of it. Then, buy a new boat when you see the size of other's wake. Curtis

Greg,
It can be done no problems. I have a 1980SN and we surf all the time.
I run 100 lbs of lead down the starboard side of the engine, 100 lbs in front of the engine & under the drivers seat. I also run a 330 lb fattue behind the engine & a 220 lb waterbed bag snaked from behind the engine & up the starboard side.
We usually only have 2 people in the boat & 1 riding.
Here is the wake,

Cheers,
Ken

I had a 78 Natique at one time and I found a Phat Seat was a wise investment. I never surfed behind the Natique but my 90 Ski Sanger had a better surf wake when I filled the Phat Seat about 1/2 full and then added the weight to one side. Try the 78 both ways, with weight all the way across the back and on one side. You might be surprised. Try to get front weighted down also. I put 50 lb. bags of sand in the front of mine. Be sure to cover them with plastic bags. Good luck and let me know how your weighting turns out.

Ken, what prop are you running on your 80?

Luciano - Standard 13x13 3 blade.

For the record, I use less fuel wakesurfing than wakeboarding with 220 lbs less ballast....
I can't wait to get my new starter so we can get back out there, Air temp over here is regularly hitting 88 F....nice

I'm tring to get started with surfing.

I thought that since the old nautis were RH propped you would ride on the other side of the wake. how's this¿?

RH Prop = Starboard side
LH Prop = Port side

These are generalisations of course as some of the bigger boats can get good surf wakes on both sides.
