Hey you guys. I was inquiring about washing the scum line off my Moomba at my local marina the other day, and they recommended using Muriatic Acid diluted with water to get rid of it. In case anyone isn't familiar with this type of acid, it is sold in everyday pool supply stores and is present in toilet bowl cleaners I believe. Anyway, my question to everyone is would this be safe on boat fiberglass? And, what ratio would be recommended? Is a 50/50 wash too strong? Any help would be really appreciated.

Mike,
I have used muratic acid for about 11 years on my boat. I dilute it about 10/1 (water/acid). I usually have two buckets, one of the diluted acid and a separate bucket of just water. I wipe a section of the boat down with the acid. Then come right behind it and wipe it down with the water. Towel it off and the boat will be showroom clean. After you are done cleaning it I would suggest a good coat of wax.

starbrite makes a product that works along the same lines, I think its called scum line remover? It contains oxcillic acid.

You could just use sno-bol toilet bowl cleaner. I used it on my white gelcoat and it looks sparkling clean. Basically, wipe it on and you can see it immediately go to work. I usually wipe down the whole side of the boat then wash it off with soapy water. Follow up with a good wax afterward, because this stuff will remove that too.
