Here's a few things to look for and clean when your impeller shreds (mine did last week at Powell). This is for a 2001 Malibu Wakesetter VLX, but should be close for all boats.

1. Remove the feed hose from the transmission to the impeller and flush it out. Chunks of rubber will end up in the hose.

2. Check the suction and discharge ports of the impeller housing for stuck chunks of rubber.

3. Pull the discharge hose off of where it connects to the motor and clean the screen out (not removable but can be cleaned by back flushing or with finger tips). Also clean any chunks from the hose. The screen is the last place rubber will be and will not allow chunks of anything into the motor.

The whole thing should only take about an hour to do instead of the few hours and a lot of frustration I went through while on the water.
