What camera for $300?

I am kind of new to taking pics and don't know much about cameras. I was wondering what the best digital camera for around $300 would be. Or if I jumped up another $150 or so would it really mater. The camera I have now is a P.O.S. Thanks

I have been impressed with the Canon SD630 (about $249 nowadays). So impressed in fact, that I am thinking about getting the new SD750 when it comes out next month. ($350) The SD1000 is under $300 and is essentially the same camera except that it has a smaller LCD display.

These so-called digital compacts are great for portability and ease of use.

If it were me I would look at the A710 from costco that comes with a 2 gig memory card. My friend just bought one, then purchased an underwater housing from Amazon.com

Try the Sony DSC P200. Fantastic camera. I love that it lets you take as much video as your card can hold (good quality, too) instead of 10 or 20 second clips and you can control the aperture and shutter speed manually if you want to.

The canon sd630 is a great camera. So is the almost identical sd600. If I were you I would throw down a bit more and go with a SLR as opposed to a point and shoot. Look at the Nikon D40 (not the d40x). You might be able to find a great deal on a D50 (Which is what I have) because they will be going out of production soon due to being replaced by the d40. You will get much better preformance out of a DSLR because they are so, so much faster (.2 sec start up and 3 frames per second). Also you have the versatility of changing lenses to go wider or more to the telephoto side for real close shots. Of course, it is alot bigger and not as convenient.

I have a DSLR and there are many times I carry my pocket point and shoot. Even my cheapest lense for my DSLR was $500.

You need to ask yourself if white balance is something you will need. If so make sure you get a camera with it.

Edit: also RAW might be something you are interested in. Choose the features that are important to you.
