is it the wind or the boats that make a lake choppy?

ya it is

i dont like perfect glass. i like those little ripples that you get in water with just a slight amount of wind. 5mph wind or less is ideal for me

it completely depends.. if there is no wind and a lot of boats then the waves will be constant and it will get really choppy. but if there are only a couple boats out then usually it won't be so bad since the waves will subside and usually you can find good water in the places where the boats already passed.

Wind on the other hand.. if it is really windy then usually only parts of the lake get blown out and not ride able. but if the wind is coming from a certain direction, depending on how big your lake is, then there will usually be one side that is still fine.

Hot air causes chop?

And to answer the question, I think that boats can mess up a lake worse than anything. With wind you can usually find a sheltered shoreline. I'd rather ride in 20mph winds than on Fourth of July.

I'm not sure which one I hate more, but at least wind doesn't tube, jet ski or drive right across your line.

^^^ Word.

You can hide from the wind but rollers can and do come from anywhere.

on my home lake.. (Pearl River/Ross Barnett Reservoir), boat traffic is most damaging than wind. River.. I can find protection.. certain wind directions on the lake and I can find protection, but because it is not a deep reservoir, a few boats and it is FULL of rollers..
so.. bass boats, tubers and random riding boats are the worst affect on my water.. (assuming mild winds)... Heavy winds.. just stinks.

Definitely both. Wind makes the continuous crappy water conditions, while boats can make for erratic waves... I have much more fun ollieing off boat waves though... I'll get that boat wave to backroll this year! haha

Perpendicular rollers also make for good impromptu double ups. Use to your advantage.
